Chapter 3 - The Flight to the HospitalThe front door slammed shut.

I didn't waste a single second weeping or processing my mother's betrayal.
I ran back into the bedroom, dropping onto my knees beside the bed, wrapping a soft cashmere blanket around Clara's body, gently lifting her into my arms. She weighed almost nothing; three weeks of starvation and fear had robbed her of all her strength.
"I've got you, my love," I sobbed into her dark hair, holding her tight against my chest as I carried her out of the apartment down the stairs. "I'm so sorry, Clara... My God, I'm so sorry I didn't see... I'm so sorry I listened to her..."
"You're here now, Marcus," Clara whispered weakly, her small, trembling hand resting against my cheek as I carried her out into the cold afternoon air. "Just save our baby..."
I flagged down a taxi on the corner, sliding onto the rear bench with Clara resting in my lap, barking orders at the driver: "Northwestern Memorial Hospital! Emergency OBGYN ward! DRIVE!"
The ten-minute drive felt like ten hours.
When the taxi screeched to a halt under the red emergency lights of Northwestern Memorial, I carried Clara through the automatic sliding doors, screaming for help: "EMERGENCY! MY WIFE IS SEVEN MONTHS PREGNANT! SHE WAS POISONED AND RESTRAINED!"
Within seconds, six nurses and two lead OBGYN trauma specialists rushed out with an emergency gurney.
They laid Clara gently onto the white sheets, immediately attaching heart rate monitors and intravenous lines as they wheeled her down the trauma corridor.
Dr. Aris Vance—no relation to my mother, a distinguished senior OBGYN trauma chief—cut away the lower blankets, inspecting the severe welts and puncture marks on Clara's legs.
His professional, calm face instantly turned into an expression of pure, unadulterated horror.
"What happened to this woman?!" Dr. Vance demanded, his voice sharp and furious.
"She was injected with illegal oxytocin and labor-inducing synthetics over three weeks by an uncertified doctor!" I yelled, tears streaming down my face as I held Clara's hand. "Check the baby! Please, check his heart!"
Dr. Vance slapped the ultrasound probe onto Clara's swollen belly, applying clear gel, turning the monitor toward the bed.
THUMP... THUMP... THUMP... THUMP...
The rapid, rhythmic sound of our son's heart echoed through the trauma room.
"Fetal heart rate is one hundred and forty, but uterine contractions are starting!" the lead nurse called out. "She's in early labor! Cervix is dilated two centimeters!"
Dr. Vance looked at me with an absolute, unshakeable urgency. "We need to stop these contractions immediately using magnesium sulfate, and we need to run a toxicology screen to neutralize whatever compound was injected into her legs. Step out into the hallway, sir. Let us work."

I kissed Clara's cold forehead, squeezing her hand with all my strength. "Fight, my queen. I'm standing right outside that door."
"I love you, Marcus," Clara whispered rasply before the medical team pulled the privacy curtain closed.
