Chapter 1 - The Marks on the SkinThe blue wool blanket slid down the mattress, pooling at the foot of the bed.

My lungs froze. The air in the bedroom turned to ice.

Clara’s pale, swollen legs were covered from her knees to her ankles in deep, sickening purple and black bruises. But it wasn't just bruising—heavy, red linear welts crisscrossed her skin, swollen and tender to the touch, as if her legs had been repeatedly struck with a thick wooden rod or heavy leather strap.

Beneath the welts, tiny, jagged puncture marks dotted her skin, fresh and inflamed, surrounded by yellowing rings of dried blood. Her ankles were raw, skin rubbed away to pink flesh where heavy restraints had clearly been tightened around her legs.

"My God..." I gasped, my voice dropping into a raspy, horrified whisper.

I fell to my knees beside the bed, my trembling hands hovering over her skin, terrified to touch her because even the air moving over those wounds made Clara let out a choked, whimpering sob.

"Clara..." I wept, tears instantly flooding my eyes as my chest caved in with sheer, agonizing horror. "Who... who did this to you?! What is this?!"

Brenda didn't gasp.

I turned my head slowly, looking up toward the doorway where my mother stood.

Brenda didn't look shocked. She didn't look horrified. Her sharp, thin face remained completely impassive, her arms folded across her chest, her bitter eyes narrowing as a cold, calculating look settled into her expression.

"I told you she was hiding something, Marcus," Brenda spoke smoothly, her voice utterly devoid of human empathy, flat and cold like iron. "She’s been taking illegal substances. Look at those needle marks on her legs. She’s a junkie, Marcus. She’s putting your baby at risk."

"NEEDLE MARKS?!" I screamed, jumping up off the floorboards, my frame towering over my mother as three years of quiet filial patience shattered into absolute, blinding rage. "THOSE ARE RESTRAINT MARKS, MOM! THOSE ARE WELTS FROM A CLUB! SOMEONE BEAT MY WIFE!"

Clara reached out her shaking hand, grabbing the hem of my shirt, her hazel eyes wild with pure, frantic terror as she stared at Brenda.

"Marcus... please..." Clara sobbed, her voice breaking into raw, desperate fragments. "Don't let her touch me... She... she comes here when you're at work... She brought those men..."

My whole body went completely, terrifyingly still.

The hum of the L train outside died away. The room dropped into a freezing, suffocating vacuum.

I turned my head very slowly, looking straight into my mother's cold, dark eyes.

"What did she just say, Mom?" I whispered, my voice dropping into a deadly, razor-sharp baritone.

Brenda’s smug expression twitched for a fraction of a second, her hands tightening against her arms. "She’s lying, Marcus! The pregnancy is making her delusional! She’s trying to drive a wedge between you and your own mother!"

"I am NOT lying!" Clara shrieked, a burst of raw, maternal adrenaline lifting her half off the mattress despite the agony in her lower body. "Three weeks ago, Brenda brought a private doctor and two men to this apartment while you were on the morning shift! They locked me in this bedroom! They strapped my legs to the bedposts so I couldn't run! Every three days... they come back and inject me with synthetic hormones to speed up labor!"

Tears of pure, unadulterated horror spilled down Clara's cheeks as she pointed her trembling finger at Brenda's face.

"She's trying to force me to give birth early, Marcus!" Clara wept. "She forged adoption transfer papers! She told the doctor I was mentally unfit so she could take our baby the second he's born!"
