Chapter 1 - The Voice in the Sub-BasementThe rasping, ragged breath coming from the shadows behind me didn't sound like a captor. It sounded like someone who had spent months fighting to keep oxygen in her lungs.

I turned with fluid, lethal speed, my hand resting on the matte-black grip of the suppressed sidearm inside my coat.

Behind the heavy iron bars of a secondary inner cell sat a tiny, pale woman wrapped in a faded gray wool blanket. Her dark hair was thin and tangled, her cheekbones hollow, but her hazel eyes held a fierce, unyielding fire that burned through the gloom of the subterranean vault.

In her arms, wrapped in a coarse hospital sheet, rested a tiny, three-month-old infant sleeping peacefully against her chest.

My knees buckled.

The six-foot-three Don who had spent six months dismantling syndicate factions across Europe collapsed flat onto the cold concrete floorboards before the iron bars.

"Grace..." I choked out, a raw, agonizing sob tearing from my throat.

Grace’s head lifted slowly. Her trembling hands clutched her baby tighter, her dry, cracked lips parting in a soundless gasp as her eyes locked onto my face.

"Dante...?" Grace whispered, her voice a fragile, rasping thread that shattered my soul into a thousand pieces. "Is it... is it really you? Or am I dreaming again...?"

"It's me, my queen," I wept, thrusting my broad, calloused hands through the iron bars, reaching for her. "My God, Grace... it's me! I'm home!"

Grace dragged her thin, exhausted body across the concrete floor until her hands met mine. The moment her cold fingers locked around my palm, she burst into a desperate, weeping breath, resting her forehead against my knuckles through the steel bars.

"She... she told me you died in Rome, Dante," Grace sobbed, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks. "Your mother came down here three months ago with a fake newspaper... she said your helicopter went down over the Alps... she took our son the second he was born and brought him down here to live in the dark with me..."

A wave of white-hot, apocalyptic fury surged through my chest so violently that my vision blurred around the edges.

My mother, Beatrice Rossi, hadn't just faked a runaway. She had constructed a psychological execution chamber directly beneath the family estate, forcing my wife to raise our newborn son in a windowless dungeon while feeding her false reports of my death.

"She lies, Grace," I swore, every word dropped into the cold cell like a heavy block of iron. "I am alive. And tonight... I am burning her world to the ground."

CLICK.

The sound of a heavy steel bolt sliding home echoed from the top of the stone staircase behind me.

Standing at the entrance of the sub-basement corridor, wearing a black silk gown, holding a heavy revolver, flanked by six armed Rossi enforcers who had served her privately for twenty years, was my mother, Beatrice Rossi.

Her face was completely devoid of maternal warmth. Her dark eyes held a cold, toxic, uncompromising madness.

"You always were too sentimental for the Rossi name, Dante," Beatrice spoke smoothly, her voice echoing off the damp concrete walls. "Your father would have left a weak woman in the dirt. You should have married the Moretti heiress as I commanded."
