Chapter 3 - The Sovereign GuardianHector’s jaw clenched with such force that a muscle twitched violently along his cheekbone. He sneered, pulling a sleek gold smartphone from his coat.

"I have three supreme court judges on my speed dial, Detective," Hector threatened smoothly. "Your badge will be stripped by morning—"

BOOM!

The heavy double doors at the end of the hospital corridor were thrown open with a sharp, thunderous force that made the glass light fixtures rattle overhead.

Walking down the hallway, flanked by four broad-shouldered corporate security directors in dark tactical suits, was a tall, silver-haired titan wearing an immaculate midnight-blue bespoke overcoat.

At sixty-five, Lord Thomas Vance—the Chief Managing Partner of Vance & Sterling Global Litigation—looked every bit the untouchable, legendary legal titan who ruled New York's corporate sector. His posture was six-foot-three of iron and authority, his dark blue eyes holding a freezing, lethal fire.

Walking directly beside his right shoulder, holding an encrypted leather binder bound by red judicial seals, was a sharp-eyed female attorney named Rachel Hayes.

Hector Santos froze in mid-sentence. The color drained from his ears so fast he looked like a corpse standing upright.

"Lord... Vance?!" Hector stammered, his arrogant composure shattering into jagged, sweating panic. "What... what are you doing in Chicago?!"

Lord Vance didn't acknowledge Hector’s existence. He walked straight past him, stopping beside my hospital bed.

His severe, carved features softened into a look of profound, fatherly warmth as he looked down at my bandaged face, my swollen cheekbone, and my small, shivering frame.

"Valeria, my sweet child," Lord Vance spoke softly, his deep, velvet baritone filling the quiet room with an absolute, unshakeable sanctuary. "I am sorry I was late."

I stared at him in total, speech-bound shock. "Who... who are you?"

Lord Vance gently took my uninjured hand into his broad, warm palm, his thumb softly brushing across my knuckles.

"Fifteen years ago, Valeria," Lord Vance revealed gently, "your late grandmother, Eleanor Vance, appointed my firm as the sole, irrevocable trustee over her forty-million-dollar maritime and real estate legacy. She knew your father was an abusive, predatory gambler who would destroy your life if he gained access to her wealth."

Teresa let out a sharp, hysterical shriek from the doorway. "ELEANOR VANCE?! Eleanor was a penniless schoolteacher!"

"Eleanor Vance was the primary heiress to Vance Energy, Mrs. Santos," Rachel Hayes corrected flatly, opening her leather binder, sliding three certified court documents before Detective Cole. "And under the master terms of the trust, the second Hector Santos inflicted physical harm upon Valeria, forty million dollars in corporate assets automatically transferred into an irrevocable, sovereign trust under Valeria's sole name."
