Chapter 2 - The Storm in the HallwayBefore I could process the detective's words, a commotion erupted outside Room 314.

Heavy, furious footsteps echoed down the tiled corridor, accompanied by the sharp, authoritative voice of a head nurse trying to maintain order.
"Sir! You cannot enter this room! She is in intensive care!"
"GET OUT OF MY WAY!" a familiar, booming voice roared back—a voice that sent a jolt of pure, paralyzing terror straight down my spine.
The heavy wooden door of my hospital room was thrown open with a violent thud.
Standing on the threshold, flanked by two expensive private security guards in dark suits, was my father, Hector Santos.
At fifty-four, Hector looked broad, imposing, and impeccably groomed in a tailored charcoal wool coat over a navy suit. His dark hair was brushed back smoothly, his jawline square and severe. But beneath his polished, aristocratic facade, his dark eyes held a wild, predatory desperation that made the air in the room freeze.
Behind him stood my mother, Teresa, her eyes red-rimmed, her face contorted in a mask of fanatical rage as she pointed a shaking, manicured finger at my bed.
"There she is, Hector!" Teresa shrieked, her voice echoing off the sterile walls. "The ungrateful snake who tried to ruin your reputation! Look at her, pretending to be a victim!"
Hector took two heavy, deliberate steps into the room, ignoring Detective Cole completely, his dark eyes locking onto the evidence bag sitting on the bedside table.
"Valeria," Hector spoke, his baritone dropping into a low, velvet rumble that held the subtle, dangerous threat he had used to control our household for decades. "You’ve caused enough disgrace to this family. You will sign the medical release forms, hand over your property, and come home immediately."
I pushed myself up against the thin pillows, every breath firing sharp needles of agony through my chest, but I kept my chin held high.
"Home?" I rasped out, my clear, hazel eyes locking onto his with an absolute, unshakeable heat. "To the garage where you fractured my cheekbone, broke my ribs, and left me to die in a pool of my own blood?"
Teresa stepped forward, spitting on the floorboards near my bed. "LIAR! You fell off the workbench! Your father tried to save you!"
"Shut up, Teresa," Hector commanded flatly, without even looking at his wife.
He stepped closer to my bed, towering over my small frame, reaching his hand out toward the evidence bag on the table.
"Hand over the phone, Detective," Hector ordered coldly. "My daughter suffers from severe psychiatric delusions following her concussion. That device is private family property."

Detective Cole didn't flinch. He casually slipped the evidence bag inside his inner coat pocket, stepping squarely between Hector and my bed, his hand resting flat against his holstered sidearm.
"This device is certified state evidence in an active attempted homicide investigation, Mr. Santos," Cole stated deadpan. "And if you take one more step toward this bed, I will place you under arrest for felony obstruction of justice."
