Chapter 7 - Forever in the Sun

The sun was dipping below the jagged peaks of the Sierra Madre, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and deep crimson.

We sat together on the stone bench overlooking the lake, a woolen blanket draped over our knees despite the lingering warmth of the evening air. Claire rested her head against my shoulder, her fingers intertwined with mine, our wedding rings catching the last dying rays of golden light.

— Do you ever miss it? — she asked softly, her voice carrying the gentle cadence of the evening breeze. — The power? The fear you commanded across three continents?

I looked down at her, tracing the delicate curve of her cheek where the bruises of that terrible night had long since faded into smooth, perfect skin.

— Never, — I answered without a single second of hesitation. — Power is just a cage made of gold, Claire. You spend your whole life defending the walls, watching your back, waiting for the knife to drop from the shadows.

I pressed my lips to her hair, inhaling the scent of lavender and mountain pine.

— But this... this is real. You are real.

Claire turned her face upward, her dark eyes shining with an emotion so fierce and pure that it made the wealth of empires look like worthless dust.

— They thought they were burying me in that snow, Ethan, — she whispered, a gentle smile gracing her lips. — They thought I was weak.

— They forgot who your father was, — I replied softly. — And they never knew who your husband was.

She leaned up, pressing her lips softly against mine in a lingering, tender kiss that tasted of sweet wine and unending tomorrows.

Down in the valley below, the lights of the town began to flicker on one by one like fallen stars, welcoming the quiet night. The empire I had built from blood and shadow slumbered across the oceans, its iron gears turning silently in the dark, guarded by loyal men who would never betray my trust.

But here, high above the world, in the warmth of a home built from forgiveness and fierce, unyielding love, the Ghost King was gone forever.

There was only Ethan.

And for the rest of our days, that was more than enough.
