Chapter 3 - The Breaking of the Vault

Dawn broke over Valle de Bravo like a jagged slash of gray steel.
The snow had stopped falling, leaving the manicured lawns of the Vance estate buried under two feet of pristine, untrodden powder. At exactly 6:00 AM, the massive iron security gates of the property groaned as they swung open automatically, triggered by a remote signal from my tactical dashboard.
I stepped out of the SUV, adjusting the collar of my heavy charcoal wool overcoat. The crisp morning air burned my lungs, sharp and clean.
Behind me, two matte-black Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans rolled silently through the gates, their tires crunching against the frozen gravel. The doors slid open simultaneously, disgorging six operatives dressed in unmarked tactical gear, led by Viktor himself—a towering man with a jagged scar across his left jawline and eyes as cold as the Siberian tundra.
— Perimeter secure, boss, — Viktor reported crisply, clicking his heels together in a military salute that made the local crows scatter from the pine trees. — Local sheriff’s department is currently stalled twenty miles away due to a simulated bridge inspection. Not a single soul can get in or out without our sign-off.
— Good, — I said, walking toward the front entrance of the mansion. — Is the legal team ready?
— Standing by with the original probate documents signed by the late patriarch, Mr. Arthur Vance, — Viktor replied, holding out a thick leather briefcase. — Complete with forensic watermark verification and video testimony from his primary oncologist proving Helena forged his signature on the secondary trust amendments.
— Excellent. Let’s go wake the family.
I didn't bother knocking. With a single sharp kick from my reinforced boot, the heavy oak front door splintered inward, the deadbolt snapping like a dry twig.
The crash echoed through the silent, opulent foyer.
Moments later, hurried footsteps echoed down the grand staircase. Helena appeared on the landing, her hair unbrushed, wearing a silk bathrobe stained with spilled coffee. Her face was gray with exhaustion and blind panic.
— What is the meaning of this?! — she shrieked, clutching the wooden banister so hard her knuckles turned white. — Who gave you permission to break my door? Where is security?!
Natalie appeared behind her, looking frantic, clutching her phone like a lifeline.
— Mom, my phone still has no service! And the house smart-system is locked! I tried to open the garage door and it says ‘Access Denied by Administrator’!
They both descended the stairs, their eyes finally locking onto me standing in the foyer, flanked by Viktor and six heavily armed operatives whose faces were half-obscured by tactical balaclavas.
Helena stopped halfway down, her aristocratic facade finally cracking completely.
— Ethan...? What is this joke? Get these thugs out of my house right now!
— This isn't a joke, Helena, — I said, walking slowly toward the base of the stairs, my voice carrying an effortless, terrifying authority that made both women freeze in their tracks. — And this hasn't been your house for the last six hours.
Natalie let out a hysterical laugh, pointing a shaking finger at me.
— Are you out of your mind? My father bought this estate with his own construction firm! We gave you a roof over your head! You’re nothing! You’re just Claire’s pathetic, useless husband!
I stopped at the bottom step, looking up at them with eyes that felt like chipped obsidian.
— Uless? Perhaps. But let me introduce you to the people who handle my portfolio.
Viktor stepped forward, opening the leather briefcase and pulling out a certified financial freeze notice issued by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission, alongside a federal arrest warrant stamped with the seal of the Attorney General’s Special Task Force.
— Helena Vance, — Viktor’s voice boomed like rolling thunder through the hall. — You are hereby formally notified that all corporate assets, personal accounts, real estate holdings, and trust funds under your control have been seized under Section 4 of the International Anti-Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Act.
Helena staggered backward, catching herself against the banister.
— That’s... that’s impossible! My accounts are protected by diplomatic immunity through the chamber of commerce! Who the hell do you work for?!
I slowly removed my leather gloves, placing them neatly on the hall table.
— Ask them who owns the parent company of the Swiss bank holding your slush funds, Helena, — I said softly, stepping onto the first stair. — Ask them whose signature authorizes the liquidation of every single commercial property in three continents.
Natalie stared at me, her chest heaving as terror finally pierced through her arrogance.
— No... no, that’s not true. You’re Ethan. You sell stocks. You’re an analyst.

— Analysts study the market, Natalie, — I replied, my voice dropping into that dark, flat register that had made warlords in Eastern Europe and cartel bosses in South America beg for a quick death. — Kings dictate it.
And last night, your mother and you tried to freeze my queen to death in the snow.
