Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The silence in the grand foyer was absolute, save for the ticking of the antique grandfather clock near the library doors.
Helena’s knees buckled. She sank onto the carpeted stair, clutching her chest as if she had just suffered a physical blow. Her empire—built on decades of social climbing, corporate extortion, and the quiet erasure of anyone who stood in her way—was evaporating in real-time.
— You... you’re him, — Helena whispered, her voice cracking as the terrifying realization finally settled into her bones. — The Ghost King... the syndicate buyer who acquired the Marseille ports last year...
— Took me long enough to notice, didn't it? — I said, taking another step up the stairs until I towered over her trembling form. — You spent seven years treating me like a servant because you measured a man by the brand of his suit and the loudness of his voice. You never bothered to look beneath the surface. If you had, you would have realized that the man who married Claire didn't need your approval, your money, or your estate. I married her because I loved her. And you spent every single day trying to break her spirit.
Natalie backed away until her spine hit the carved wooden railing of the landing.
— Mom, make him stop! Call the lawyers! Call somebody!
— There are no lawyers coming, Natalie, — Viktor said, stepping to the foot of the stairs with a stack of federal foreclosure notices. — Your legal counsel in Mexico City was arrested at 4:00 AM for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud and extortion. Your Swiss accounts have already been swept clean to fund global pediatric charities—ironically, under the foundation established by your late husband, Arthur Vance.
Helena raised her head, her eyes flashing with a desperate, venomous hatred.
— You think you can just throw us out?! This is our home! We raised Claire here!
— You didn't raise her, Helena, — a quiet, steady voice echoed from the front doorway.
We all turned.
Claire stood in the entryway, wrapped in my heavy wool coat, her face pale but her chin held high. She leaned slightly against the doorframe for support, but the terror that had consumed her the night before was gone, replaced by a profound, unshakeable calm.
— You never raised me, Mother, — Claire repeated, walking slowly across the foyer, her boots clicking softly against the marble tiles. — You imprisoned me. You stole my father’s legacy the day he drew his last breath, and you treated me like a prisoner in my own home because I wouldn't bow to your greed.
Helena scrambled up the steps, lunging toward Claire with her fingernails clawed like a desperate animal.
— You ungrateful little bitch! You ruined us! You brought this monster into our family!
Before Helena’s fingers could even brush Claire’s shoulder, Viktor moved with terrifying speed. His heavy hand clamped around Helena’s wrist, pinning her arm behind her back with a sickening pop of stiff joints. Helena screamed out in pain, collapsing face-first onto the wooden step.
— Never touch the Signora again, — Viktor snarled, his voice like grinding stones. — Unless you want your remaining years spent eating through a straw in a Siberian penal colony.
Natalie shrieked, dropping to her knees beside her mother.
— Don't hurt her! Please! Ethan, make him stop!
I looked down at the two women who had spent years treating human life as disposable currency.
— Viktor, pack their things, — I commanded, my voice devoid of mercy. — Give them exactly ten minutes to pack two suitcases each. No jewelry, no designer clothes, no cash. Put them in the back of that old Ford pickup truck parked by the stables.
— Where... where are we going?! — Natalie sobbed, burying her face in her hands.
— To a modest apartment in the industrial district of Monterrey, — I replied smoothly. — I’ve paid three months of rent in advance. After that, you’ll have to find honest work. Something you should have started doing twenty years ago.
Helena glared up at me from the floor, her face bruised with humiliation, her eyes burning with pure venom.

— You can't do this to us! We are high society! We belong to the elite!
— Society is built on rules, Helena, — I said, turning my back on her and walking over to stand beside my wife, wrapping my arm securely around Claire’s waist. — And the people at the very top of the world don't answer to high society. They write the laws you thought protected you.
