Chapter 6 - The Confrontation on the MarbleThe private security guards immediately moved forward to block my path, but Claire raised her right hand gently, signaling for them to hold their positions.

She stepped down the stone stairs of the stage, her midnight-blue silk skirt rustling softly against the marble floorboards, stopping three feet from where I stood.
I looked at her face—seeing zero hatred, zero bitterness, and zero anger in her clear hazel eyes. She looked at me with the quiet, weightless indifference one might feel toward an old stranger who had long since faded into history.
"Daniel," Claire spoke softly. Her clear, velvet voice was calm, steady, and absolute.
Tears burst from my eyes, cutting clean tracks through my pale cheeks as I dropped flat onto my knees right on the white marble floorboards before her feet.
I knelt flat before my ex-wife in front of five hundred high-society guests, reaching my shaking hands out toward her silk dress, weeping in total, unadulterated groveling defeat.
"Claire... my God, Claire..." I sobbed, pressing my forehead against the marble floor near her shoes. "Forgive me... please! I was insane! I was blind! I ruined everything! I don't care about the company, I don't care about the money... I just want my wife back! Let me come home!"
Claire didn't step back, nor did she pull her dress away in disgust. She stood before me with quiet, unbroken grace, looking down at the man who had once believed money and arrogance could fix everything.
"You were never home, Daniel," Claire revealed softly, every word dropped into the quiet ballroom like a final, unbroken truth. "For nine years, you were in love with your own image, your own power, and your own convenience. I was just the quiet person who kept your house warm while you ran after cheap flattery."
"I changed, Claire!" I wept, looking up into her clear hazel eyes with bloodshot, desperate pleas. "I live in a small apartment! I think about you every second of every day! Give me one chance... just one chance to earn your love back!"
Claire reached into her small velvet evening clutch, pulling out a small, worn leather-bound notebook—the private diary she had kept during our nine years of marriage.
She opened the first page, showing me a dried, pressed orchid I had given her on our first anniversary, beside a date written in gold ink: October 14, 2017 — The day I promised to love Daniel forever.

Then she flipped to the last page, showing me a newspaper clipping from April 15, 2026—a photograph of me leaving a hotel in Tokyo with Madison Sterling—beside a single sentence written in black ink: April 15, 2026 — The day I set myself free.
"I loved you with my whole heart for eight years, Daniel," Claire whispered softly, closing the notebook gently. "I didn't leave you because I hated you. I left you because I finally remembered how to love myself."
