Chapter 5 - The Gala at the DrakeOn a rainy Thursday evening, I stood inside the grand ballroom of The Drake Hotel.

The room was filled with five hundred international business leaders, diplomats, supreme court justices, and media executives moving across white marble floors under crystal chandeliers.

I wore my last remaining dark suit, my face thin, gaunt, and lined with seven months of sleepless nights and deep, agonizing regret. My eyes darted frantically across the room, searching through the sea of high-society figures for the woman I had lost.

At 8:30 PM, the master of ceremonies stepped up to the main podium on the elevated stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the speaker announced, his voice echoing cleanly through the high-end audio system. "Tonight, the Board of Directors of The Bennett-Vance Global Maritime Conglomerate is proud to introduce our new Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer."

The double mahogany side doors of the stage opened smoothly.

Stepping out onto the stage under the blinding glare of white stage lights was Claire.

My heart stopped beating in my chest. My breath trapped in my throat like a lump of cold lead.

She didn't look like the quiet, simple wife who had spent nine years sitting in my shadow.

She wore an exquisite, floor-length midnight-blue velvet gown designed by a top house in Paris, her dark hair swept back in a royal knot, her hazel eyes holding a quiet, unshakeable, and sovereign authority that held the entire room spellbound.

Beside her walked her lead attorney, Patricia Holloway, and four broad-shouldered private security operators in dark suits.

She looked radiant. Powerful. Unbroken.

The room erupted into thunderous, standing applause as billionaires and diplomats bowed their heads in genuine respect to the woman who now controlled the largest shipping logistics empire on the East Coast.

I pushed through the crowd of executives, my hands shaking, my voice breaking into a raspy, desperate plea as I reached the foot of the stage stairs.

"Claire!" I called out over the applause. "Claire... please!"
