Chapter 4 - The Recovery at the Sunlit VillaBy late November 2026, four weeks after the emergency surgery, the sun broke through the autumn clouds over the tree-lined grounds of the Bennett Private Estate in Lake Forest.

Instead of returning to the sunless, dark Moretti mansion, I moved into my parents' magnificent, sunlit six-bedroom Victorian villa overlooking Lake Michigan.
The physical recovery had been slow and painful, but under the care of top specialists, my uterine wall healed completely, and my baby girl—whom the doctors confirmed was growing strong and healthy—thrived inside my womb.
My physical and emotional transformation was total and complete. My hazel eyes regained their bright, radiant luster, my dark hair shone with health, and surrounded by my parents' fierce love, my heart claimed its peace.
Every single day at 8:00 AM, a private courier arrived at the estate gates carrying a single bouquet of white gardenias—my favorite flower—and a handwritten letter from Vincent.
He never tried to force his way past my father's security guards. He never demanded to see me. He sat in his dark SUV parked two hundred yards down the lane, watching the house from a distance, protecting my perimeter without ever disturbing my peace.
One morning, I sat on the sunlit garden terrace wrapped in a warm cashmere shawl, holding my five-month pregnant bump, reading his latest letter:
"Claire, my love,
Today the doctors told me your checkup went perfectly and our daughter's heartbeat is strong. I wept when I heard the news.
I do not write this letter asking for your forgiveness. What I did in that hallway—allowing ten years of lies to blind me, striking the woman I swore to protect, and walking away while you bled—is something I will spend every remaining breath on this earth repenting for.
The company is yours. The estate is yours. My life is yours. If you choose never to see my face again, I will accept it as my rightful justice. But as long as I draw breath, no shadow, no threat, and no pain will ever touch you or our daughter again.
Forever your protector,
May you like
Vincent"
Tears tracked quietly down my cheeks as I folded the letter, resting my hand gently over my growing belly, feeling a strong, distinct kick against my palm.
