Chapter 2 - The Audit of Ten Years of LiesFor six agonizing hours, the surgical lamps inside Operating Room 3 remained lit.

Outside in the private surgical waiting wing, the atmosphere was thick with a suffocating, deadly tension. Four armed Vance Security officers guarded the double doors, while Senior Federal Prosecutor Marcus Vance sat at a mahogany table, reviewing encrypted digital files laid flat before him.

Vincent Moretti sat in a low leather armchair in the corner of the room. He had refused to sit on the sofa. He had refused water. He had refused his suit jacket. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, stained with dark drops of my blood from when he had tried to touch the gurney. His head rested in his large, calloused hands, his body shaking with quiet, uncontrollable, silent sobs.

Standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, guarded by two heavy-set officers, was Sophia Reynolds. Her wrists were bound behind her back in temporary plastic zip-ties, her white silk coat ruined by tear stains, her face hollowed out by fear.

CLICK.

The heavy double doors of OR 3 swung open.

Dr. Marcus Cole stepped out, pulling off his surgical mask, his face lined with profound exhaustion.

Vincent bolted out of the chair so fast he nearly knocked over the heavy coffee table. He stumbled toward the doctor, his voice a frantic, desperate rasp:

"Is she...?! My wife... my baby?!"

Dr. Cole looked at Vincent with a cold, unyielding professional severity.

"Your wife survived the emergency surgery, Mr. Moretti," Dr. Cole stated flatly. "We repaired a four-inch tear in her uterine wall and controlled the retroperitoneal hemorrhage. She has been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit in critical but stable condition."

Vincent let out a long, shuddering breath, dropping flat onto his knees right on the floorboards, burying his face in his hands as he wept tears of pure, desperate relief. "Thank God... thank God..."

"Do not thank God yet, Mr. Moretti," Dr. Cole interrupted coldly, looking down at the kneeling Don. "Your unborn daughter suffered severe oxygen deprivation during the abruption. She is currently stable, but Mrs. Moretti has made her medical directives absolute. You are permanently barred from her room, her recovery floor, and her medical records under a legal restraining order executed two hours ago by her personal attorney."

Vincent lifted his head, his gray eyes wide with disbelief. "I am her husband! You cannot keep me from my wife and child!"

"She isn't just your wife, Vincent," Marcus Vance spoke up from the table, his deep baritone cutting through the room like an iron blade. "She is Claire Bennett—daughter of Arthur Bennett, sole founder of Bennett Global Logistics."

Marcus tapped a tablet screen, projecting high-definition corporate ledgers and encrypted text logs onto the wall displays:

THE MANIPULATION OF 2016–2026: Certified text logs detailing ten years of systematic psychological manipulation orchestrated by Sophia Reynolds and Vincent's late mother to ensure Claire never produced an heir, allowing Sophia's family trust to absorb the Moretti shipping proxies.

THE SHOPPING ACCOUNT EXTORTION: Financial records proving Sophia Reynolds embezzled over $1.4 million from Claire’s private trust accounts over a three-year period using forged signatures.

THE ASSAULT EVIDENCE: High-definition internal security camera footage from the Lake Forest estate foyer, capturing the exact moment Vincent struck Claire, her body crashing into the table, and Sophia whispering "Let her learn her lesson" before leading him out the door.

Vincent stared at the wall displays, his chest heaving, his jaw working as the full, hideous picture of his own blind stupidity washed over him.

He turned his head slowly toward Sophia Reynolds.

His gray eyes were no longer filled with grief. They were filled with an absolute, apocalyptic rage that made Sophia drop flat onto her knees, screaming in terror.

"You..." Vincent whispered, stepping toward her with slow, heavy, lethal strides. "You made me destroy my own family."

May you like

"Vincent! Please!" Sophia shrieked, thrashing against her zip-ties. "I did it for us! Your mother wanted me to be your wife! Claire was never right for you! She's just a schoolteacher's daughter!"

"My wife was the only real thing in my sunless life," Vincent snarled, reaching out to grab her by her collar, pulling her face two inches from his. "And you... you are a parasite who will rot in a federal cell for the rest of your pathetic life."
