Chapter 3 - The Midnight Siege at Beacon HillAt 2:00 AM, the quiet, cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill in Boston were shrouded in a thick, Atlantic fog.

Our sunlit brownstone sat peacefully behind a wrought-iron gate, dark and quiet. Upstairs, Emily was sleeping soundly in her canopy bed, her gold academic trophy resting proudly on her bookshelf.

I was sitting in my second-floor study, reviewing quarterly reports for my interior architectural firm, when I heard the low, rumbling hum of high-displacement engines idling outside.

I walked to the window, parting the sheer linen curtains.

Parked directly beneath the streetlamp were three black Cadillac Escalades.

The doors opened simultaneously. Four bodyguards stepped out to secure the perimeter, and from the lead vehicle emerged Vincent Moretti.

He wore no overcoat despite the autumn chill. His dark suit was rumpled, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled. He walked up the stone steps of the brownstone with heavy, desperate strides.

DING-DONG!

The doorbell chimed through the quiet house.

I didn't rush. I didn't panic. I calmly closed my laptop, walked down the grand wooden staircase, unlocked the heavy oak front door, and pulled it open just three inches, leaving the security chain latched.

Vincent stopped on the porch. He looked through the narrow gap at my face.

"Claire..." he choked out, raising his hands toward the door as if begging for permission to touch the wood. "Claire, please... let me in. Just for five minutes. Let me see my daughter."

"Your daughter is sleeping, Vincent," I replied. My voice was smooth, cool, and flat as glass. "And she doesn't know who you are."

"I was a monster," Vincent wept, his voice cracking into raw, pathetic threads. "I was a blind, arrogant fool. Sophia lied to me... she told me you abandoned the hospital willingly... she told me—"

"Sophia told you what you wanted to hear, Vincent," I interrupted, cutting through his excuses like a laser. "Because you wanted an excuse to prioritize your mistress and your son over your wife and your daughter. You made your choice seven years ago in a hospital corridor."

Vincent slammed his palm against the doorframe, making the old timber shudder. "I was blind! But I’m her father! I have rights!"

"You surrendered your rights the day you walked away from us," I said, my hazel eyes flashing with cold, absolute authority. "If you attempt to approach Emily, if you attempt to file a single custody motion without my consent, my legal team will publish every financial and criminal audit we hold on Moretti Global Logistics before the sun rises."

Vincent froze.

He knew what that meant. My attorney, Madison Parker, had spent six months compiling the exact same corporate and tax records that Bridget Colton had used to dismantle the other Chicago syndicates. One word from me, and the federal government would seize every shipping terminal, casino, and real estate holding Vincent possessed.

"Claire..." Vincent whispered, dropping his forehead against the wooden door, his shoulders shaking with silent, agonizing sobs. "Please... don't take her away from me. Take everything I own. Take the company. Take my life. Just let me be a part of her world."

"You want to be a part of her world?" I asked quietly.

Vincent lifted his head, his bloodshot eyes filled with desperate hope. "Yes! Anything!"

"Then prove it," I said. "Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, sign over fifty percent voting equity of Moretti Global Logistics into an irrevocable trust managed solely by Emily and me. And then... wait for my call."

Before he could answer, I closed the heavy oak door and slid the deadbolt home.
