Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in ChainsThree days after the arrest, Daniel Miller sat in an interrogation room at the Federal Judicial Building, wearing an orange county inmate jumpsuit.

His dark hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, his hands bound by heavy steel handcuffs attached to a waist chain.
Without Hale Capital’s financial backing, every prominent defense attorney he contacted had refused to take his case, knowing the sheer mountain of evidence aligned against him.
The heavy steel door of the interrogation room clicked open.
I walked inside, accompanied by my father, Richard Hale, and Jonathan Vance.
When Daniel saw me step into the room, wearing my tailored suit, looking radiant, strong, and completely unbroken, he let out a dark, ragged sob, reaching his chained hands across the metal table toward me.
"Claire!" Daniel wept, his voice cracking into raw, groveling pleas. "My God, Claire... forgive me! I was insane! Vanessa manipulated me! She poisoned my mind against you! I love you, Claire! I've always loved you!"
My father stepped forward, setting his broad hand flat on the table, leaning his tall frame down until his dark obsidian eyes were inches from Daniel's pale face.
"Do not speak her name, Mr. Miller," my father said, his baritone so cold and absolute that Daniel went instantly silent, trembling in his chair. "You looked at my daughter for five years and saw a helpless girl you could exploit. You used her kindness to build your pathetic pride, and then you raised your hand against her."
Daniel swallowed hard, tears cutting clean tracks through his stubble. "Mr. Hale... please... I'll give back the money! I'll sign over the company! Just drop the assault charges... don't let me die in prison!"
Jonathan Vance opened a leather folder, sliding a master settlement document across the metal table.
"This is the total asset liquidation decree, Mr. Miller," Jonathan explained flatly. "You will sign over one hundred percent of Miller Construction, your remaining personal accounts, and all secondary properties to Miss Claire Hale."
Daniel grabbed the pen with shaking fingers, signing his name frantically on every signature line without reading a single word. "There! I signed it! It's done! Now tell the prosecutor to drop the charges!"
I reached out my hand, picking up the signed documents, looking down at him with a quiet, unshakeable pity.
"The civil settlement recovers my father's money, Daniel," I revealed softly, every word dropped into the quiet room like a final, unbroken truth. "It has nothing to do with your criminal trial. You go before the judge on Monday morning."

Daniel’s jaw sagged open in total, horror-stricken realization. "YOU LIED TO ME?!"
"No, Daniel," I corrected cleanly, turning my back on him as the guards opened the heavy door. "I simply let you experience the consequences of your own choices."
