Chapter 4 - The Fall of VanessaWhile Daniel sat in a freezing holding cell at the county precinct, unable to post his ten-million-dollar emergency bail, Vanessa Cole was discovering the true price of her ambition.

At 9:00 AM the following morning, Vanessa arrived at her luxury penthouse apartment in downtown Chicago, wearing an expensive designer coat, intending to pack her bags and flee the country before the legal storm consumed her.

When she stepped into the marble lobby, she found two federal marshals and a building manager waiting beside the elevator.

"Miss Vanessa Cole?" the lead marshal asked flatly.

Vanessa froze, clutching her leather handbag tightly against her waist. "Yes... what's going on?"

"This apartment, along with the luxury vehicle parked in space fourteen and all secondary accounts registered under your name, has been placed under emergency federal seizure," the marshal announced, holding out an official judicial order.

Vanessa’s face went paper-white. "Seizure?! You can't seize my apartment! Daniel bought this for me!"

"Daniel Miller purchased this property using funds embezzled directly from Hale Global Capital subsidiaries," the manager interjected coldly. "You have ten minutes to collect your personal clothing in a single bag. Everything else—including your jewelry, designer handbags, and vehicles—is federal property."

"NO!" Vanessa shrieked, tears of hysterical rage streaming down her face as she lunged toward the elevator. "THIS IS UNFAIR! I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! CLAIRE HALE IS DOING THIS TO ME!"

"Miss Cole," a sharp, clear voice echoed from the front entrance of the lobby.

Vanessa spun around.

I walked into the lobby wearing an exquisite midnight-blue tailored suit, my dark hair swept back in an elegant knot, flanked by Jonathan Vance and two private security operators.

I stopped three feet from her, my hazel eyes holding a quiet, weightless power that made her stumble backward.

"Claire...!" Vanessa gasped, her voice trembling violently. "Please! Tell them to stop! I was wrong! Daniel lied to me! He told me he hated you! He forced me to go to your house!"

I looked down at the woman who had stood near my bedroom door sixteen hours ago, holding my wine, encouraging my husband to whip me.

"You thought you were taking my life, Vanessa," I spoke softly, my voice calm, clear, and absolute. "You thought you were moving into my home, wearing my clothes, and sleeping in my bed. But you didn't realize that everything Daniel gave you was bought with my father's money."

I stepped closer, looking straight into her terrified eyes.

"You have five minutes to clear your things, Vanessa," I promised cleanly. "Because by noon... you will be facing federal conspiracy charges as an accessory to grand larceny."

Vanessa collapsed flat onto her knees right on the lobby floorboards, weeping in total, pathetic defeat as the marshals led her away in chains.
