Chapter 4 - Serena’s Masterclass in ManipulationBack in Chicago, the atmosphere inside the executive suite of the Vale International building was thick with suppressed violence.

Adrian sat behind his massive obsidian desk, staring blankly at a stack of private investigator reports that sat unread. For ten days, his agency had scoured airports, hotels, and interstate registries across three states, and every single lead had turned up an empty dead end. Elena had vanished as completely as if she had dissolved into thin air.
A soft, hesitant knock echoed at the heavy double doors of his office.
“Enter,” Adrian barked, his voice sounding like grinding stones.
The door clicked open, and Serena Keller stepped inside. She wore a delicate ivory silk dress, her blonde hair styled in loose waves, her eyes carrying a carefully practiced expression of fragile distress.
“Adrian...” Serena murmured, stepping toward the desk with soft, hesitating steps. “I heard from Marcus that you’ve been working twenty-hour days. I was worried about you. You haven't returned my calls all week.”
Adrian didn't look up from his desk. He kept his pen clutched tightly in his fingers. “I’ve been busy, Serena.”
“I know it’s about Elena,” Serena said softly, resting her hand gently on the edge of his desk. Her lower lip quivered with theatrical vulnerability. “And I feel so terrible about it. I truly do. But... honestly, Adrian, if she walked out over a simple phone call when I needed medical assistance, does she really possess the resilience required to be a proper wife to a man in your position?”
The pen in Adrian’s hand snapped straight down the middle with a sharp crack.
Serena jumped slightly, her eyes widening.
Adrian slowly raised his head. His dark eyes didn't look at Serena with the indulgent, protective fondness he had maintained for years out of a sense of moral debt to her late father. They looked at her with a cold, terrifying emptiness that made the air in the room drop twenty degrees.
“Don't ever speak about my wife that way again,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register.
Serena blinked, taken aback. “Adrian... I’m just trying to help you see reality! She threw a tantrum and abandoned you! My father gave his life so you could build this empire, and I’m the only one who truly understands the sacrifices—”
“Your father saved my life on a battlefield in Kandahar fifteen years ago,” Adrian interrupted, standing up slowly from his leather chair. His tall, imposing frame towered over the desk. “And I honored that debt by paying for your Ivy League education, setting up your trust fund, buying your apartment, and answering every single emergency you’ve manufactured for the past six years.”
Serena’s face drained of color. “Adrian... what are you saying?”
“I’m saying the debt is paid in full, Serena,” Adrian said coldly, stepping around the desk until he stood inches from her. “Every medical emergency, every broken car, every late-night panic attack—I tracked the records yesterday. Three of your ‘emergencies’ last year coincided exactly with dates Elena and I had planned romantic getaways. You didn't need rescuing, Serena. You were simply terrified of losing the safety net I provided.”
“That’s not true! You’re twisting everything because you’re angry!” Serena shrieked, her mask of fragile innocence shattering instantly into shrill hysteria. “She brainwashed you! She’s a nobody designer from a middle-class family who trapped you with a baby!”
“She never trapped me with anything,” Adrian roared, slamming his fist against the mahogany bookshelf with a force that rattled the crystal decanters across the room. “She gave me her heart, her patience, and six years of unconditional loyalty—and I threw it away to answer your phone call. Get out.”
Serena stared at him, her mouth trembling, realizing too late that her web of manipulation had finally snapped, taking her entire lifeline down with it.
“You’ll regret this, Adrian,” she hissed, tears of pure rage springing to her eyes as she turned on her heel and stormed out of the office, slamming the heavy doors behind her.

Adrian sank back down into his leather chair, rubbing his temples as a splitting headache hammered behind his eyes. He picked up his phone, dialed his lead private investigator directly, and spoke with a cold, absolute resolve.
“Find her,” Adrian ordered. “I don't care how much it costs. Find my wife.”
