Chapter 3 - The Awakening of the Exiled WifeThree hundred miles away in a quiet, sunlit university town in Michigan, the morning air smelled of pine and damp earth.

I sat at a rustic wooden table in a small, independent bakery, nursing a warm cup of oat-milk tea while reviewing architectural blueprints spread out across the counter. My laptop hummed softly beside me, displaying my newly activated freelance portfolio under my maiden name: Elena Vance, Architectural Consulting & Historic Restoration.
It felt surreal to breathe air that didn't carry the invisible weight of Adrian’s security detail or the suffocating expectations of Chicago high society.
When I left the penthouse, I hadn't run blindly. Three years ago, while Adrian was busy expanding his shipping ports, I had quietly completed my master’s degree in structural engineering online using a secondary bank account my father had set up for me before he passed away—an account Adrian never knew existed. I had saved my own design commissions, quietly building a financial parachute just in case the day ever came when loving my husband became incompatible with surviving.
The bell above the bakery door chimed, and soft footsteps approached my table.
“You’re hiding out in a bakery three hundred miles from the Windy City, and you didn't even tell your best friend you were crossing state lines?”
I looked up to see Chloe standing there, balancing two massive pastry boxes in her arms, a triumphant grin spread across her face.
“I wasn't hiding, Chloe,” I smiled, gesturing to the empty chair opposite me. “I was relocating.”
Chloe dropped the boxes onto the table with a thud and slid into the chair, her eyes scanning my face with intense scrutiny. “You look... different. Lighter. Like someone took a fifty-pound lead vest off your chest.”
“I feel like it,” I admitted, taking a sip of my tea. “How is he?”
Chloe rolled her eyes so hard I thought they might get stuck. “Oh, absolute disaster zone. According to my cousin in his corporate office, Adrian tore through the downtown headquarters on Monday morning like a hurricane. He fired his administrative assistant for scheduling a late meeting, threatened to pull funding from three major accounts, and has been interrogating every mutual acquaintance we have trying to find your location.”
I kept my expression neutral, tracing the rim of my ceramic cup. “He’ll realize soon enough that tracking me down isn't as easy as tracking a corporate shipment.”
“He knows you’re pregnant, right?” Chloe asked quietly, her expression softening.
“He knew the exact second I told him,” I replied, my voice dropping slightly. “And in that exact same second, he chose to answer Serena’s phone call. The baby’s father made his priorities crystal clear, Chloe. I’m not going to spend the next twenty years competing with a ghost from his past.”
Chloe reached across the table, squeezing my hand tightly. “Good. Because you deserve a man who puts you first every single time, not just when it’s convenient between emergencies.”
Just then, my phone—a brand-new burner device with an unlisted number—vibrated gently on the table.
I looked down at the screen. An unknown caller ID from a Chicago area code.
I let it ring. It went to voicemail, then buzzed again immediately.

“Is it him?” Chloe asked, leaning forward.
“It’s him,” I said calmly, sliding the phone face down onto the wooden table, letting the vibrations hum harmlessly against the grain. “And he’s going to have to get used to the sound of voicemail, because I’m never picking up again.”
