Chapter 6 - The Final Reckoning

The final blow to the Marcone syndicate didn't happen in a dark alley with gunfire. It happened in a federal courtroom in downtown Manhattan.

Jonathan Miller took the stand as a cooperating federal witness, trading a reduced sentence for every single financial ledger, shipping manifest, and encrypted communication linking the Marcone family to international smuggling and political corruption.

By noon, federal agents had raided three major Marcone warehouses across Brooklyn and Queens. The leadership was indicted, their assets frozen, their empire dismantled piece by piece.

When the news flashed across the television screens in the penthouse living room, Marcus stood by the window with a rare, satisfied grin.

“It’s over, Boss,” Marcus said. “The Marcone family is finished.”

Elias stood beside me on the sofa, holding Claire in his arms while Chloe slept soundly against my chest. He looked down at the screen, then turned his gaze to me.

“Are you satisfied?” Elias asked softly.

“I’m free,” I said, resting my head against his broad shoulder. “Jonathan is going to prison for twenty years. My father’s corrupt empire is gone. And my daughters will never know what it feels like to be unwanted.”

“They will never know anything except being adored,” Elias promised fiercely, pressing a warm kiss to the top of my head.

Three months later, the federal trials were completely concluded. The city of New York returned to its frantic, roaring pace, but inside the Vance penthouse, time seemed to slow down into something sweet and permanent.

Jonathan was transferred to a maximum-security federal penitentiary upstate, where he would spend decades reflecting on the family he had thrown away for a son he would never hold.

And my father? Retired, disgraced, living quietly in a modest Florida condo with no lawyers, no PR firms, and no influence left to wield.

As for us, Elias had one final surprise.

It was a crisp April afternoon. Elias told me to dress the girls in their Sunday best and meet him on the private rooftop terrace of the penthouse.

When I stepped out onto the glass-enclosed terrace, my breath caught.

The entire space had been transformed into a breathtaking garden of white roses and blossoming spring flowers overlooking the sparkling waters of the Hudson River. There was no press, no underworld bosses, no armed guards—just forty of the closest people who had protected us, including Marcus and the medical team who had saved my life that first terrifying night.

And standing at the end of the floral aisle, looking impossibly handsome in a custom charcoal tuxedo, was Elias.

My heart hammered as I walked slowly down the stone pathway, holding Chloe in one arm while Claire walked unsteadily beside me, holding onto the hem of my ivory silk dress.

When I reached him, Elias knelt down, gently taking Claire’s tiny hand before standing up to look into my eyes.

“Ava,” Elias said, his voice steady, rich, and filled with a lifetime of devotion. “When I found you under that bridge, I didn't just rescue a mother and her children. I rescued myself. You brought light into a world I thought was permanently locked in shadow. Will you, and these two incredible girls, let me spend the rest of my life proving to you that love isn't something you have to earn—it’s something I will freely give you, every single day?”

Tears spilled over my lashes, but they were tears of absolute, profound joy.

“Yes,” I whispered, my voice ringing clear across the garden. “Yes, Elias. A thousand times, yes.”
