Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at CourtThree weeks later, the civil courtrooms of downtown Chicago were packed to capacity.

The trial—or rather, the swift, merciless legal dismantling of Adrian Vale—had become the biggest media spectacle of the season. Financial news networks ran live tickers across the bottom of their screens: “VALE DIVORCE SETTLEMENT FINALIZED: RECORD BREAKING ASSET STRIPPING.”
I sat at the plaintiff's table, flanked by a team of senior corporate attorneys from Sterling-Vanguard.
Across the aisle sat Adrian. He looked shell-shocked, wearing an off-the-rack suit that didn't quite fit his frame, his hair unbrushed, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table. Vanessa was nowhere to be found; she had vanished the moment the bank accounts were frozen, leaving Adrian entirely alone to face the wreckage of his choices.
The honorable Judge Thomas adjusted his glasses, reviewing the final settlement documents spread out before him.
"The court has reviewed the uncontested marital dissolution filings, along with the verified forensic accounting audits provided by Sterling-Vanguard Capital," Judge Thomas announced, his voice echoing through the quiet courtroom. "Given the fraudulent concealment of marital assets, systemic corporate malfeasance, and documented instances of domestic physical abuse..."
He paused, looking directly down at Adrian with stern disapproval.
"...the court hereby orders the complete and total dissolution of the marriage between Adrian Vale and Eleanor Sterling. All remaining personal assets, corporate shares, real estate holdings, and liquid accounts belonging to Adrian Vale are hereby seized and transferred to the plaintiff as restitution and punitive damages."
The gavel came down with a sharp, definitive crack.
Bang.
It was over.
Adrian Vale was legally bankrupt, professionally blacklisted, and stripped of every single cent he had ever boasted about.
As the gallery murmured and reporters scrambled toward the exit doors to file their reports, Adrian remained seated at his table, staring down at his empty hands as if he were trying to comprehend how a man could lose an entire universe in less than a month.
I stood up, buttoned my jacket, and began walking down the center aisle toward the grand double doors of the courthouse.
"Eleanor."
Adrian’s voice cracked behind me, sounding small, broken, and utterly defeated.
I stopped, but I didn't turn around.
"Please," Adrian whispered, the sound of his dignity completely eroding. "Just... give me something. A second chance. A small stake in the company. Anything. I'll do whatever you want. I'll be whatever you need me to be. Just don't leave me with nothing."
I turned my head slightly, looking back at him over my shoulder.
May you like
"You had everything, Adrian," I said, my voice cold and clear as mountain water. "And you traded it all because you thought cruelty was power."
I didn't wait for his answer. I pushed open the courtroom doors and stepped out into the brilliant, golden Chicago sunshine.
