Chapter 4 - The House of CardsBy Friday evening, the news had broken across every financial publication in the country.

“VALE ENTERPRISES COLLAPSES: EMERGENCY TAKEOVER BY STERLING-VANGUARD GROUP.”
“ADRIAN VALE STRIPPED OF ASSETS AMID FRAUD INVESTIGATIONS.”
I sat in the penthouse apartment that Adrian had once claimed as his ultimate trophy, watching the city lights twinkle through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. The police tape hadn't been put up yet, but the apartment felt hollow, stripped of its soul—if it had ever had one to begin with.
The private elevator chime pinged softly.
Heavy, uncoordinated footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.
A moment later, Adrian stumbled into the living room.
He looked like a man who had aged twenty years in four days. His expensive designer suit was rumpled, his shirt collar unbuttoned, his tie missing, and his hair wildly out of place. His eyes were bloodshot and hollow, staring around the room with the frantic desperation of a cornered animal.
Then he saw me sitting in the velvet armchair by the window, sipping a glass of dry white wine.
"You," Adrian rasped, his voice cracking violently as he lunged forward.
Before he could take three steps, two massive private security guards—men wearing black tactical suits stamped with the Sterling-Vanguard insignia—materialized from the shadows of the hallway and pinned Adrian’s arms behind his back, forcing him to his knees on the very same marble floor where he had struck me with the riding crop less than a week ago.
"Let me go!" Adrian roared, thrashing uselessly against their grip. He glared up at me with incandescent fury. "What kind of sick game are you playing, Eleanor?! You stole my company! You froze my accounts! I've been interrogated by federal agents for twelve hours straight!"
I took a slow sip of my wine, setting the glass down on the side table before standing up.
I walked over and stood a few feet above him, looking down with calm, detached indifference.
"I didn't steal anything, Adrian," I said quietly. "I simply repossessed what belonged to my family in the first place."
Adrian stared at me, his chest heaving. "Your family? Your family is nobody! You told me your father was a retired mechanic in Ohio!"
"My father is Arthur Sterling," I replied evenly. "The founder of Sterling-Vanguard Capital. The man whose venture fund single-handedly finances half the Fortune 500. You were too busy staring at your own reflection in the boardroom mirror to ever check the pedigree of the quiet girl you married."
Adrian froze. The name Arthur Sterling hit him like a physical blow. The titan of Wall Street. The ghost investor who never appeared in public, whose wealth was measured in billions, not millions.
"No," Adrian whispered, shaking his head in frantic denial. "No, that's... that's impossible. You're Eleanor. My wife."
"Not anymore," I reminded him, pulling the divorce papers out of my portfolio and letting them flutter down onto his chest. "Sign the petition, Adrian. Or face federal charges for corporate embezzlement and wire fraud. Those are your only two options."
Just then, the front door clicked open.
Click-clack, click-clack. The sharp sound of stiletto heels clicking against the marble foyer.
Vanessa stepped into the living room, wearing another designer dress, holding a Gucci shopping bag. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Adrian pinned to the floor by armed guards and me standing over him like a queen surveying a conquered province.
"Adrian?" Vanessa blinked, her voice dropping its usual sugary sweetness, replaced by sudden, sharp panic. "What's going on? Why are there security guards here? And why hasn't our broker returned my calls about the penthouse down payment?"
Adrian looked up at her, his face twisting into an expression of pure, venomous hatred.
The realization hit him all at once. The golden parachute he thought he had secured, the future he had planned with his mistress, the child he had bragged about—it was all built on quicksand.
"Ask her," Adrian spat, nodding toward me with a bitter, maniacal laugh. "Ask your rich provider how much money I have left to pay for your designer dresses, Vanessa. Go on! Ask her!"
Vanessa turned her sharp, calculating eyes toward me. For a second, the mask slipped, revealing the gold-digging opportunist beneath.
"Eleanor," Vanessa said, forcing a brittle, nervous smile as she stepped forward. "Look, let's be reasonable. Whatever misunderstanding there is between you and Adrian... I'm sure we can work it out like civilized women. After all, I'm expecting a baby. Adrian and I are starting a family. Surely you wouldn't be so cruel as to—"
"A family," I interrupted, my voice cutting through her plea like a razor blade.
I stepped closer to Vanessa, looking down at her stomach, then meeting her eyes with a chilling smile.
"Do you really think Adrian is going to be able to support you and a child, Vanessa?" I asked softly. "Do you think he can afford your rent, your dresses, or your private obstetrician when he doesn't even own the clothes on his back?"
Vanessa’s face paled. She looked back down at Adrian, who was still pinned to the floor, glaring at her with undisguised contempt.
"Adrian?" Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling. "Tell me she's lying. Tell me you have money hidden offshore. Tell me you're still a rich man."
Adrian let out a harsh, broken laugh, his head dropping against the marble. "We're broke, Vanessa. She took everything. We don't even have a dime to buy a cup of coffee."
Vanessa staggered backward, the Gucci shopping bag slipping from her fingers and crashing onto the floor, spilling expensive cosmetics across the marble.
"You lied to me," Vanessa hissed, staring down at Adrian as if he were a piece of garbage. "You pathetic, broke loser. You told me you were a billionaire!"
May you like
She turned on her heel and sprinted toward the private elevator, punching the call button frantically, desperate to escape a sinking ship.
I didn't stop her. Let her run. Let her discover what life was like when the money ran out and the illusion shattered.
