Chapter 5 - The Subpoena and the Settlement OfferThe legal avalanche continued unabated through the following week.

Daniel’s firm didn't just fire him; they launched a secondary internal audit into his past client billing practices, discovering several irregularities that added federal mail fraud to his growing list of legal nightmares. The state prosecutor, armed with the pristine country club security footage and three corroborating witness statements from guests who finally grew a spine, formally indicted Daniel on charges of domestic battery and assault.
On Thursday morning, my divorce attorney, Sarah Jenkins, sat across from me in my office at Aura Gourmet Supply, sipping black coffee.
“Well, Emily, the defense team has finally reached out with a settlement proposal,” Sarah said, sliding a thick document across my desk.
I raised an eyebrow. “A settlement? From Daniel?”
“Desperation makes people very cooperative,” Sarah smiled, flipping to the signature page. “He’s offering to sign an uncontested divorce decree immediately, relinquishing all claims to any marital property, bank accounts, or future assets. In exchange, he’s begging us to ask the district attorney for leniency on the battery charge so he avoids prison time.”
I picked up the document, skimming through the clauses. It was a complete and total surrender. Every single demand my legal team had made was met.
“And what about Margaret?” I asked.
“Oh, Margaret’s Coral Gables social standing is effectively dead,” Sarah chuckled. “Her country club revoked her membership, her bridge club friends blocked her number, and she’s currently trying to sell her oversized home because she can't afford the property taxes without Daniel’s financial backing.”
I set the pen down on the desk, feeling a profound, weightless sense of peace wash over me. For fourteen years, I had carried the burden of keeping the peace in a house built on sand. I had swallowed my voice, dimmed my brilliance, and allowed myself to be small so that a mediocre man could feel tall.
Never again.

“Tell them we accept the divorce terms,” I said calmly, sliding the signed document back to Sarah. “As for the criminal charges? I don't dictate what the district attorney does. Actions have consequences. If Daniel wanted leniency, he shouldn't have raised his hand against his wife.”
Sarah nodded approvingly, gathering the papers. “It will be done by tomorrow afternoon, Emily. You’ll be a legally free woman.”
