Chapter 1 - The Footage That Shocked the Country ClubThe audio recording from the service entrance camera played in the private country club dining room, crystal clear and damning.

First came the sharp, unmistakable sound of skin hitting flesh. Then, the gasp of the room. Followed immediately by Daniel’s smug, rehearsed voice echoing through the silence: “She pushed me too far.”

Forty relatives froze in horror.

Daniel stood dripping in lukewarm gravy and beef chunks, his bespoke Italian wool suit ruined beyond salvation. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly white beneath the glittering crystal chandelier. He stared at my phone screen as if it were a venomous snake.

“Where... where did you get that?” Daniel stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating.

“The club manager gave me remote administrative access when I paid the deposit for this entire venue,” I said calmly, slipping the phone back into my pocket. I wiped a tiny smear of blood from my lower lip with a linen napkin and looked around the table.

Margaret’s mouth was open in a silent O, her face turning crimson. Vanessa, who had been screaming for the police just seconds ago, slowly sank back into her chair, staring at the floor.

“You can call the police now, Vanessa,” I added, my voice cutting through the heavy, suffocating air like a razor blade. “In fact, why don't you? Let’s let the officers review high-definition footage of your brother committing felony domestic assault in front of forty witnesses.”

Panic set in among the relatives. Uncle Arthur muttered something about an early morning tee time and grabbed his coat. Cousin Greg practically tripped over his own feet rushing toward the exit. Within three minutes, half the room had scattered like roaches when the kitchen light is flipped on. They hadn't come for family loyalty; they had come to bask in Daniel’s ego, and the moment the ship started sinking, they abandoned it without a second thought.

Daniel lunged forward, ignoring the beef chunks sliding down his trousers. “Emily, wait. Let’s not blow this out of proportion. It was a stressful night, I had too much wine—we can talk about this at home—”

“There is no home, Daniel,” I interrupted, looking him dead in the eye. “Not anymore. And as for your career at the corporate law firm? You might want to update your resume before Monday morning. Because my legal team already has a copy of this video, and they’re forwarding it to your senior partners alongside your firm's ethics committee before midnight.”

With that, I turned my back on my husband of fourteen years, walked out of the country club doors into the cool evening breeze, and got into my car, leaving Daniel standing alone in a puddle of gravy.
