Chapter 4 - The Fall of the ArrogantRichard Mercer didn't stop until we stood three feet from Dominic and Vanessa.

The three hundred guests pulled back in a wide, breathless circle, leaving the center of the ballroom like an arena.

Dominic’s sweat was already beading along his hairline, his breathing shallow and frantic. "Mr. Mercer... sir! There has been a misunderstanding! This woman... this is my wife, Evelyn! She shouldn't be here tonight! She—"

"She is not your wife, Dominic," I interrupted. My voice was calm, resonant, and clear, carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom. "You terminated that contract at 7:12 PM tonight. Remember?"

Vanessa stepped forward, her voice high and sharp with panicked desperation. "Evelyn, this is highly inappropriate! You can't just crash a private gala with... with an escort to humiliate Dominic!"

Richard Mercer turned his steel-gray eyes slowly onto Vanessa Quinn.

The sheer, freezing weight in his gaze made Vanessa stumble backward half a step, her face draining of all color as she grabbed Dominic’s sleeve for support.

"Miss Quinn," Richard spoke, every word dropped into the room like a slab of cold granite. "You are a public relations vice president whose contract with Vale Logistics was terminated ten minutes ago when my firm acquired the voting majority of your parent company."

Dominic let out a choked, terrified gasp. "What... what did you say?!"

I pulled the black envelope from my clutch, removing the certified voting proxy documents, and handed them flat against Dominic’s chest.

"For eight years, Dominic," I revealed deadpan, looking straight into his wide, bloodshot eyes, "you believed my father was an ordinary accountant. You never asked why my family’s name appeared on the original 1994 charter for the Chicago River Terminals."

Dominic’s hands trembled so violently he could barely hold the paper. His eyes scanned down the legal typeface:

VANCENT TRUST HOLDINGS: 51% VOTING EQUITY

PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: EVELYN VANCENT VALE

CHIEF TRUSTEE: RICHARD MERCER

"You thought I needed your money to enter this world, Dominic," I whispered, stepping closer so only he could hear the lethal, quiet truth. "The truth is, my father’s trust funded your first four commercial fleet leases. I let you play the king because I loved you. But tonight... you brought a mistress to my family's gala and told me I wasn't the right kind of woman for your life."

Dominic’s knees visibly buckled. He dropped to his knees flat on the polished marble floor of the ballroom, the proxy papers scattering around his expensive Italian leather shoes.

"Evelyn... please!" Dominic sobbed pathetically, reaching out a shaking hand toward the hem of my emerald dress. "Evelyn... I didn't know! I was wrong! Vanessa meant nothing to me! Please... don't do this!"

I pulled my gown back half an inch, looking down at the man who had spent eight years treating me like an invisible shadow.

"You told me you wanted me gone by morning, Dominic," I said softly, my hazel eyes holding zero anger, zero regret, and absolute, unshakeable victory. "I won't even wait for the sun to rise."
