Chapter 3 - The Silence in the RoomThe massive, mahogany double doors leading from the executive foyer into the main ballroom were thrown open by two senior hotel directors.

The ambient chatter in the room didn't stop immediately, but it began to wither from the entrance outward—a wave of total, breathless silence spreading across the marble floor like ice over warm water.
Richard Mercer walked down the central aisle, his posture sovereign, unhurried, and absolute.
And resting on his right arm, her spine straight, her posture royal, her emerald dress capturing the light of a hundred crystal chandeliers, was me.
A glass slipped from a waiter's tray near the grand staircase, shattering against the marble floor. CRASH.
No one looked at the waiter.
Politicians, shipping directors, and corporate board members instantly parted, bowing their heads in unconscious deference as Richard moved past. Whispers erupted like a wildfire behind gloved hands:
"Is that Mercer...?"
"My God, who is the woman with him?"
"Look at her emeralds... those are the Vance family estate jewels!"
"Wait... isn't that Dominic Vale's wife?!"
Near the center table, Dominic turned his head at the sudden, unnatural silence in the room. He was mid-sentence, raising his champagne flute to propose a toast to Vanessa, when his eyes landed on the entrance.
The crystal glass froze mid-air.
Dominic’s face turned from a flush of triumphant arrogance to a pale, ghostly white in less than two seconds. His jaw sagged open, his dark eyes bulging out of his head as he stared at the woman he had told to pack her things three hours earlier.
Beside him, Vanessa’s triumphant smile completely disintegrated. Her eyes locked onto my emerald necklace, then onto my dress, and finally onto the man whose arm I was holding.
Dominic knew who Richard Mercer was. For fifteen years, Dominic had built his shipping company around one singular, paranoid rule: Never borrow from Mercer. Never owe Mercer. Never cross Mercer.

And now, his discarded wife was standing in the center of the city’s most exclusive gala, holding the arm of the emperor himself.
Dominic took a fast, clumsy step forward, his voice cracking in a high, frantic squeak. "Evelyn...?! What... what is the meaning of this?!"
