Chapter 6 - The Festival of the Emerald ScarsIn late September 2026, ten months after that unforgettable night at the Plaza Hotel, the grand auditorium of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity for the inaugural Vivian Bennett Heritage & Burn Survivor Gala.

Over five hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, federal prosecutors, and high-society matriarchs gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.

Standing at the main presentation podium, wearing a dark bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his broad six-foot-four frame squared, his handsome face glowing with deep, quiet pride, was Gideon Ashford.

Beside him stood Donna Vivian Bennett-Ashford, looking breathtaking in a floor-length backless dark emerald silk evening gown, her scars illuminated in diamond-lit glory, her hazel eyes glowing with complete happiness.

Around my neck hung my late father's restored silver signet pendant.

Gideon adjusted the microphone, his deep, resonant baritone echoing cleanly through the high-fidelity speakers:

"Ten months ago, an arrogant coward tried to hide his crimes behind a backless dress mandate, expecting the bravest woman in New York to stay home," Gideon announced to the silent room, his storm-gray eyes shining with genuine, unshakeable devotion as he looked down at me. "And on that night, she wore the gown, showed her scars to the world, and proved that a queen doesn't hide from the fire... she conquers it."

Gideon held his champagne glass high under the glittering lights.

"To Vivian!" the entire room erupted into a warm, unanimous standing ovation, five hundred crystal glasses clinking together under the open sky.
