Chapter 3 - The Gala at the Grand BallroomAt 9:00 PM the following evening, the grand mahogany ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity for the annual New York Founders' Gala.

Over five hundred prominent real estate magnates, hedge-fund titans, supreme court justices, and high-society matriarchs gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.
Standing near the raised executive stage, wearing a thousand-dollar tuxedo, holding a champagne glass, was thirty-four-year-old Preston Vance. Beside him stood his pregnant mistress, Cassidy Vaughn, wearing a low-cut crimson silk gown, her diamond rings catching the light as she smirked over her champagne glass.
Every wealthy woman in the room wore backless gowns, showing smooth, pristine skin, exactly as Cassidy had mandated.
"Oh, Preston," Cassidy giggled softly, rubbing her baby bump, "it's so wonderful your hideous wife stayed home in her turtleneck! She would have completely ruined the aesthetic of the founders' portrait."
Preston sneered, sipping his scotch. "Vivian knows her place, sweetheart. She's a broken burden. Tomorrow morning, I sign the Ashford equity deal, and she gets served with divorce papers."
BOOM!
The heavy double oak doors of the grand ballroom were thrown open with a violent, hydraulic impact!
The chatter of five hundred high-society guests vanished into an absolute, speech-bound silence.
Walking down the central red-carpeted aisle, flanked by Chief Security Director Marcus Vance and four armed federal marshals, was Gideon Ashford.
He wore a dark bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his broad six-foot-four frame squared, radiating an untouchable, sovereign authority that dropped the room's temperature to absolute zero.
And walking right beside him, wearing a breathtaking floor-length dark emerald silk gown with an entirely open, plunge-back design—revealing her jagged, heroic burn scars in full, majestic, diamond-lit glory—was Donna Vivian Bennett.
Around her neck hung a fifty-carat emerald signet pendant, her dark hair falling in glossy waves over one shoulder, her posture regal, her presence dominating the entire room.
Preston Vance dropped his scotch glass.
CRASH!
The heavy crystal glass shattered flat against the marble floor, splashing alcohol over Cassidy’s crimson train as his face went from arrogant red to an ugly, paper-white shade of green. Cassidy stood up so fast she knocked her chair backward against the wall.
"P-PRESTON...?! GIDEON?! VIVIAN?!" Cassidy stammered, taking two panicked steps backward against the stage. "WHAT IS THIS ILL-MANNERED INTERRUPTING?! SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE AT HOME!"
"She isn't at home, Cassidy," Gideon announced flatly, his clear, deep baritone carrying cleanly across the silent hall, dropping the temperature to zero. "She is the Executive Chairwoman of the Ashford-Bennett Trust... and the owner of your entire existence."
Bridget Colton stepped forward, sliding a thick stack of court-stamped legal notices flat into Preston Vance’s trembling hands:
TOTAL EQUITY SEIZURE: Certified federal enforcement of the Bennett Trust Deeds, transferring 100% controlling equity directly to Chairwoman Vivian Bennett.
ARREST WARRANTS: International arrest warrants served on Preston Vance and Cassidy Vaughn for Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder (in the chemical arson fire), Arson, Forgery, and $40 Million Wire Fraud.
IMMEDIATE EVICTION & ASSET FREEZE: Total forfeiture of all personal properties, luxury vehicles, and bank accounts registered under Preston Vance’s shell companies.
"THIS IS UNLAWFUL!" Preston shrieked, thrashing wildly as two uniformed federal marshals stepped forward with heavy steel handcuffs. "VIVIAN, I AM YOUR HUSBAND! YOU SACRIFICED YOUR BACK FOR ME!"
"I sacrificed my back for a man I thought loved me," Vivian corrected deadpan, stepping beside Gideon, wrapping her broad, warm arm securely around his waist, leaning flush against his solid side. "Now you pay for every single burn."
