Chapter 4 - The Arrest on Lake Shore DriveThe destruction of the Hayes empire took less than seventy-two hours.

By Thursday morning, federal agents from the FBI and the IRS had executed twenty-four simultaneous search warrants across Alexander's shipping terminals, casinos, and corporate headquarters in Chicago.

The local news outlets carried breaking coverage twenty-four hours a day: MAFIA KINGPIN ALEXANDER HAYES INDICTED ON FEDERAL RACKETEERING AND TAX EVASION CHARGES.

Madison Hayes was taken into custody outside her River North boutique, facing six counts of felony money laundering. Olivia Carter’s father was arrested at O'Hare International Airport while attempting to board a private jet to the Bahamas.

Through it all, Alexander didn't hire a team of high-priced defense attorneys. He didn't flee the country. He didn't issue a single public statement.

He stayed inside the empty Gold Coast mansion, sitting in Grace’s untouched bedroom, holding her small pink blanket, watching the rain fall over the city he had once ruled.

At 2:00 PM, four black federal SUVs pulled up the circular driveway of the estate.

Lead FBI Special Agent Miller walked up the grand stone steps, flanked by four armed tactical officers.

The front double doors were unlocked.

Agent Miller stepped into the grand foyer, finding Alexander standing near the central marble staircase, wearing a plain black suit, holding a small leather binder containing every remaining financial key to his assets.

"Alexander Hayes?" Agent Miller announced, pulling his badge. "I have an arrest warrant issued by the Northern District of Illinois for federal racketeering, wire fraud, and corporate conspiracy."

Alexander didn't draw a weapon. He didn't move his hands toward his jacket.

He stepped down the marble stairs, holding out his wrists cleanly, his dark eyes hollow and completely devoid of life.

"I'm ready, Agent," Alexander said softly.

As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists, Agent Miller looked at the former crime boss in quiet surprise. He had expected a war; he had expected barricaded doors and armed bodyguards.

"You're not going to fight this, Hayes?" Agent Miller asked, guiding him toward the front doors. "Your legal team could stall this indictment for eighteen months."

Alexander stopped on the threshold of his empty home, looking back one final time at the grand parlor where Grace used to run across the rugs, laughing, calling his name.

"There is nothing left to fight for, Agent," Alexander murmured, his voice cracking into a quiet, broken whisper. "My wife took the only thing that mattered when she left."
