Chapter 3 - The Gathering of ScavengersBack in Chicago, the Hayes estate on the North Shore was in absolute, chaotic ruin.

Alexander had returned from Toronto twelve hours later, his eyes bloodshot, his suit rumpled, his broad frame hollowed out by three days of agonizing sleeplessness and alcohol. He had searched every hotel, every private terminal, and every acquaintance's residence in Ontario, only to find that my paper trail had vanished into thin air.

He sat behind his massive mahogany desk in his private study, drinking neat bourbon, staring at a framed photograph of Grace sitting on my lap in our summer garden.

The study doors burst open.

His sister, Madison, walked into the room, wearing a three-thousand-dollar designer outfit, holding her phone with a trembling hand, her face flushed with frantic rage. Behind her walked Olivia Carter, wearing the diamond necklace Alexander had given her at the anniversary dinner.

"Alexander!" Madison shrieked, slamming her phone flat onto his desk. "What the hell is going on?! The federal marshals just froze my boutique's primary operating accounts! My credit cards were declined ten minutes ago at Neiman Marcus!"

Olivia stepped forward, her voice pitching high in panic. "Alexander, my father’s real estate firm just received a federal grand jury subpoena! They said someone submitted an internal audit proving fraud! You need to call the District Attorney right now and fix this!"

Alexander didn't look at either of them. He took a slow sip of his bourbon, his dark gray eyes hollow, dead, and utterly unbothered by their screaming.

"Alexander! Are you listening to me?!" Madison barked, reaching out to shake his broad shoulder. "That crazy bitch Emily did this! She stole corporate files before she ran away to Canada! You need to send Marco and your strike team to drag her back here and force her to sign a retraction!"

Alexander slowly turned his head.

His gaze locked onto his sister's face—a face he had spent five years indulging, a sister who had posted photos of him celebrating Olivia's birthday while his four-year-old daughter was bleeding to death on a cold pavement.

"She didn't steal anything, Madison," Alexander whispered, his voice dropping into a register so dark and terrifying that Madison's hand froze in mid-air.

"What... what are you talking about?" Madison stammered, taking an instinctive step back.

Alexander picked up a manila folder from his desk—the packet that had been delivered to his private office by a courier thirty minutes ago—and tossed it flat onto the coffee table in front of Olivia.

"Read it, Olivia," Alexander commanded softly.

Olivia’s hands trembled as she opened the folder. Inside were forty pages of bank transfers showing that her father had embezzled fourteen million dollars from the Hayes casino accounts over eighteen months—using her personal account as the primary conduit.

Olivia went dead pale. "Alexander... I... I didn't know... my father told me those were legitimate consulting fees—"

"You knew," Alexander interrupted, his voice flat, emotionless, and cold like a open grave. "You knew my daughter was waiting for me at preschool four months ago. You called my phone four times telling me your birthday cake was arriving. You told my sister to make sure I didn't leave the party."

"Alexander, no!" Olivia wept, stepping toward him, reaching out her hands. "I loved you! We were meant to be together! Emily was just a quiet, boring housewife who didn't fit into your world!"

Alexander stood up slowly from his leather chair.

His six-foot-three frame, once the terrifying monarch of the Midwest, towered over both women. But his eyes held no anger. They held only an absolute, catastrophic realization of his own unforgivable stupidity.

"Emily was the only person in this world who loved me for who I was, Olivia," Alexander whispered, tears finally spilling over his lashes, burning down his pale cheeks. "She built my home. She gave me my daughter. And I let you and my sister convince me that your shallow, greedy games were worth more than my family."

He reached out, his long fingers gently hooking around the diamond necklace resting at Olivia's throat.

With one swift, effortless motion, he yanked the platinum chain.

SNAP!

The diamond necklace shattered, precious stones cascading across the hardwood floor like cold drops of rain.

"Get out of my house," Alexander commanded, his voice dropping into a quiet, absolute hammer blow. "Before I hand the rest of your father's files to the federal prosecutor myself."
