Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The preliminary hearings began ten days later in a high-security federal courtroom in Mexico City.

The defense team hired by the Cárdenas family—expensive, slick lawyers in custom Italian suits—attempted to spin an absurd narrative. They claimed that Rodrigo and his parents were innocent victims of a bitter marital dispute, that the audio recordings were manufactured deepfakes, and that I had suffered a psychotic break during our honeymoon due to severe seasickness.

That defense evaporated the moment Diego Salvatierra walked to the podium and plugged a high-definition thumb drive into the courtroom’s central audiovisual system.

The courtroom fell into absolute, suffocating silence as the pristine audio file recorded on my burner phone began to play through the overhead speakers.

“This night we’re going to push her overboard... When she’s declared dead at sea, Rodrigo gets the 300 million dollars...”

Rodrigo’s voice, cold and clinical, echoed off the marble walls of the courtroom. Then came Teresa’s callous laughter, and Federico’s calculation regarding my father’s planned accident on the highway.

In the defendant’s box, Rodrigo turned the color of ash. He stared straight ahead, unable to meet the gaze of the federal judge or the reporters packed into the gallery. His mother, Teresa, burst into loud, hysterical sobs, burying her face in her hands as the damning evidence washed over the room.

“Your Honor,” Diego said smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses as he presented signed bank transfer slips, forged power-of-attorney documents, and wiretapped communications between Rodrigo and the criminal operatives hired to target Ernesto. “What the court has just heard is not a marital dispute. It is a premeditated, multi-layered conspiracy involving attempted murder, grand financial fraud, forgery, and criminal association.”

The judge didn't even need to recess for deliberation.

“The court finds the defendants Rodrigo Cárdenas, Federico Cárdenas, and Teresa Cárdenas guilty on all primary counts,” Judge Morales announced, his gavel slamming down with a sharp, final crack. “Given the severity of the charges and the threat posed to national security and public safety, the defendants are remanded to a maximum-security federal correctional facility without the possibility of bail, pending final sentencing.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward, snapping heavy handcuffs onto Rodrigo and his parents to lead them away to holding cells, Rodrigo turned his head. His eyes met mine across the courtroom. There was no arrogance left in them—only a pathetic, hollow terror as he realized that the quiet, trusting bride he had tried to drown had engineered his complete and utter destruction.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply watched him vanish through the heavy oak doors, knowing that the nightmare was finally, permanently over.
