Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at NaritaEthan stumbled backward two steps, his jaw sagging open in total, speech-bound horror.

Susan’s face contorted into a grotesque mask of shock and confusion, her hands trembling so violently she dropped her leather handbag onto the polished floorboards.

"Claire...?!" Ethan stammered, taking a clumsy, trembling step toward me. "How... how are you here?! You... you were in Bangkok! You didn't have a passport!"

I took a slow, deliberate sip of my warm tea, my hazel eyes holding him with a cold, weightless disdain that dropped the temperature around us below zero.

"I didn't have a passport because you stole it, Ethan," I spoke softly. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried an unyielding, velvet power that echoed through the quiet transit area. "You, your mother, and your sister took my phone, my wallet, and my documents while I slept, and left a note telling me to figure it out myself."

Susan pushed past her son, her sharp face flushed red with unhinged, desperate rage. "YOU UNGRATEFUL BITCH!" Susan shrieked, reaching her manicured hand toward my shoulder. "WHAT DID YOU DO TO OUR COMPANY ACCOUNTS?! WHY IS FIRST NATIONAL FREEZING OUR WAREHOUSES?!"

Before Susan’s fingers could come within two inches of my coat, Sarah Croft stepped forward.

With a single, swift, and effortless movement, Sarah caught Susan’s wrist in mid-air, twisting it back slightly, forcing the sixty-two-year-old woman flat onto her knees right on the airport floorboards.

"ARGH!" Susan shrieked in pain.

"Touch Mrs. Vance again," Sarah warned into Susan's ear, her voice cold as surgical steel, "and you will spend the next forty-eight hours in a Japanese detention facility for physical assault."

"Mom!" Chloe screamed, backing away in total terror.

Ethan dropped flat onto his knees beside his mother, looking up at me with bloodshot, weeping eyes, his hands raised in a frantic, groveling plea.

"Claire... my God, Claire... forgive me!" Ethan sobbed, his voice cracking into raw, pathetic pleas. "I was crazy! My mother made me do it! She told me you were trying to control me! I didn't know you were... you were Vance Global!"

"You didn't know because you never bothered to ask, Ethan," I revealed, every word dropped into the quiet terminal like a slab of cold iron. "For six years, you looked at me and saw a quiet girl you could exploit. You used my grandfather's money to build your pathetic pride, and then you left me in a foreign country without a phone."

I stepped closer, looking down at him groveling on the floor.

"You told me to figure it out myself, Ethan," I reminded him softly. "I did."
