Chapter 5 - The Glass PartitionThe Cook County Department of Corrections internment facility was cold, sterile, and smelled of cheap floor disinfectant.

I sat behind a thick glass partition in the private visitor's room, wearing an elegant white wool coat, my diamond ring glistening on my right hand. Julian stood two steps behind my chair, his arms crossed over his broad chest, his presence an immovable wall of intimidation.
The metal door on the other side of the glass opened, and a guard ushered Brendan inside.
The transformation was horrific.
The arrogant, handsome man who had worn three-thousand-dollar custom suits thirty-six hours ago was completely gone. Brendan wore an oversized orange jumpsuit, plastic shoes, and his hair was unwashed. A deep purple bruise covered his left eye—a gift from his cellmates after he tried to demand special treatment on his first night.
He sat down heavily on the metal stool, his hands shaking violently as he picked up the gray phone receiver.
I picked up mine.
"Cassidy..." Brendan sobbed, pressing his forehead against the cold glass, tears pouring down his bruised face. "Cassidy, please... please God, get me out of here! My lawyer said I'm looking at fifteen years in federal prison!"
"You committed wire fraud, tax evasion, and corporate embezzlement, Brendan," I said calmly, my voice flat and completely devoid of affection. "Those are federal crimes. You did that to yourself."
"I did it for us!" Brendan lied frantically, his eyes darting wildly to Julian standing behind me. "I was trying to build an empire so I could impress you! I didn't know you owned Sovereign! If you had just told me—"
"If I had told you," I interrupted coldly, "you would have loved my money, not me. And you proved that thirty minutes before you were arrested, when you poured dirty water over my head and told me to take twenty dollars for a cab."
Brendan winced as if I had slapped him. "My mother made me do it! She's crazy, Cassidy! She's living in a homeless shelter right now! She lost everything! Please, drop the charges! I'll sign any custody waiver! I'll never come near you or the baby again! Just give me a second chance!"
"Custody waiver?" I asked, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "Brendan, you don't need to sign a custody waiver. Bloodline tests were completed this morning under court supervision. Your parental rights have been legally terminated under state fitness laws due to criminal indictment."
Brendan froze, his eyes widening in pure horror. "No... no, she's my daughter—"
"She is my daughter," I corrected him firmly, leaning closer to the glass. "And she will grow up knowing that her mother built an empire, destroyed her enemies, and wiped away every trace of the coward who tried to make her feel small."
I set the phone receiver back onto its hook.
"Cassidy! No! Please! Cassidy!" Brendan screamed, slamming his hands against the glass, making smudges of sweat and grease as the guards grabbed his arms, dragging him backward through the metal door.
I stood up, pulling my white coat tight around my shoulders, turning to look at Julian.

Julian looked down at me, a proud, fierce smile gracing his handsome face. "Ready to go home, CEO?"
"Yes, Julian," I smiled, holding out my hand to him. "Take me home."
