Chapter 1 - The Shattered CrownThe silence in the grand dining room was so absolute you could hear the dirty water dripping off my lace hem onto the fifteen-thousand-dollar Persian rug.

Brendan's frown deepened, a subtle crease of annoyance cutting through his polished, handsome face. He adjusted his silk tie, attempting to maintain his usual posture of casual superiority. "What kind of pathetic scam are you pulling now, Cassidy? 'Protocol 7'? Are you trying to sound important in front of Jessica?"
Jessica chuckled, leaning into Brendan’s arm, her diamond bracelet sparkling under the crystal chandelier. "Honestly, Brendan, it’s embarrassing. She’s probably calling her little college friends to come pick her up in a beat-up sedan."
Diane, my ex-mother-in-law, picked up her silver fork, casually cutting into her filet mignon. "Brendan, call security and have her escorted out the back gate. She’s dripping sewage onto my floor. The sheer lack of class is suffocating."
Before Brendan could reach for his phone, heavy footsteps thundered through the marble foyer.
It wasn't the slow, casual walk of house staff. It was the synchronized, aggressive march of men trained for tactical enforcement.
The double doors to the dining room swung open with a bang, slamming against the mahogany walls. Four men in tailored black suits entered, led by a tall, gray-haired man with razor-sharp eyes and an immaculate briefcase.
It was Arthur Vance, the Chief Executive Vice President of Legal Operations for Sovereign Global—the trillion-dollar conglomerate that owned forty percent of the city's commercial infrastructure, including Morrison Logistics, where Brendan worked as a mid-level director.
Brendan froze. His fork clattered onto his porcelain plate. "Mr... Mr. Vance? What are you doing at my mother’s house?"
Diane immediately stood up, her cold demeanor instantly melting into a forced, sycophantic smile. "Arthur! What a surprise! We were just having dinner. Is there an urgent corporate matter regarding Brendan's promotion?"
Arthur didn't look at Diane. He didn't look at Brendan. He didn't even acknowledge Jessica, who was rapidly shrinking back into her chair.
Arthur walked straight past them, stopped directly in front of my wet, shivering frame, and bowed his head in deep, absolute respect.
"Ma'am," Arthur said, his voice echoing with profound formality. "Protocol 7 is fully engaged. As of thirty seconds ago, all personal and corporate assets linked to the Morrison family have been frozen under Emergency Fraud Clause 9. Security teams have secured the perimeter."
Diane gasped. "What?! What are you talking about?! Who is she to you?!"
Arthur turned slowly, his eyes locking onto Diane with total contempt. "You are addressing Cassidy Sovereign-Vane. Founder, majority shareholder, and Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Global Industries."
The room went deathly cold.
Brendan’s face drained of every ounce of color, turning a sickly, translucent white. "No... No, that's impossible. Cassidy is an orphan! She worked as a low-level archivist! She didn't have a penny when I married her!"
"She was living under a private blind trust to evaluate your family's character before integrating Morrison Logistics into our global portfolio," Arthur replied flatly, pulling a tablet from his briefcase. "And unfortunately for you, Mr. Morrison, your family failed the evaluation in the most catastrophic manner imaginable."

My baby kicked hard again inside my belly, a strong, healthy movement. I placed my wet hand gently over my bump, looking straight into Brendan's terrified, trembling eyes.
"The bath was very refreshing, Diane," I said softly, my voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "Now... let's discuss your eviction."
