Chapter 7 - The Sunrise We Claimed

Six months later, the transition from a fake marriage to a real one hadn't happened with a dramatic confession or a grand romantic gesture. It had happened in the quiet moments—over burnt pancakes on Sunday mornings, late-night conversations about pediatric healthcare funding, and the way Lily giggled every time Giovanni chased her around the penthouse living room.
The domestic partnership had long since been converted into a permanent, legal marriage, celebrated not with a room full of fake society snobs, but with a quiet, intimate dinner surrounded by the people who actually mattered.
We were standing on the wraparound balcony of the penthouse at sunrise.
The morning sky over Lake Michigan was painted in breathtaking shades of gold, rose, and violet. Inside, Lily was still fast asleep in her room, clutching her favorite dinosaur plushie.
Giovanni wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched the sun break over the horizon.
"You know," he murmured, his breath warm against my neck, "when I pulled you onto that dance floor six months ago, I thought I was just solving a scheduling conflict with my aunt."
I smiled, leaning back into his solid chest, resting my hands over his. "And what do you think now, Mr. Fierro?"
"I think," Giovanni whispered, turning me around so I was facing him, his amber eyes shining with a deep, unwavering devotion, "it was the only real decision I ever made."
I reached up, my fingers tracing the faint scar along his jawline before wrapping around his neck. "You're incorrigible, Giovanni."
"And you're stuck with me," he smiled, before pulling me into a kiss that made the entire world—and all the ghosts of my past—fade away into nothingness.

Standing there in the golden morning light, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:
I hadn't just survived the night my old life ended. I had claimed the entire sunrise.
