Chapter 4 - Emeralds and Ashes

The Chicago Symphony Gala was louder, grander, and infinitely more terrifying than the wedding reception.
When the private elevator doors opened directly into the grand foyer of Symphony Center, the low hum of conversation among Chicago’s elite died instantly. Every head turned. Every eye locked onto us.
I wasn't wearing a clearance-rack dress this time. Earlier that afternoon, a team of tailors had arrived at the penthouse with a custom-designed, deep emerald silk gown that seemed to catch every facet of the crystal chandeliers overhead. My hair was swept up into an intricate chignon, and a simple, breathtaking diamond-and-emerald pendant rested against my collarbone—a family heirloom Giovanni had quietly fastened around my neck before we left.
Giovanni stood beside me, his arm firm around my waist, radiating an aura of absolute, untouchable power.
As we walked down the grand staircase, I saw Tyler standing near the champagne tower with Vanessa. Tyler looked like he hadn't slept in days; dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his suit hung loosely on his frame. When our eyes met across the foyer, he took an involuntary step forward, his mouth opening as if to call out my name.
Giovanni noticed. Without breaking his stride, he subtly shifted his body, completely blocking Tyler from my line of sight, guiding me straight toward the center of the room where the board members were gathered.
"Giovanni! My boy!"
A heavy-set, formidable-looking man with silver hair—Arthur Sterling, head of the city's largest real estate conglomerate—stepped forward, raising his glass with a forced, tight smile. "We were beginning to think you’d eloped to Vegas. And who is this lovely young lady?"
"Arthur, allow me to introduce my wife, Jessica," Giovanni said, his voice ringing with absolute pride. "Jessica, this is Arthur Sterling, one of my oldest business partners."
Arthur’s eyes swept over me, searching for any sign of hesitation, any crack in my composure. I didn't flinch. I remembered every night shift in the pediatric ward, every terrified parent I had calmed down, every impossible medical crisis I had navigated. High society was just a room full of children in expensive costumes.
I extended my hand. "A pleasure, Mr. Sterling."
May you like
Arthur blinked, clearly surprised by the steady grip of my hand, before a genuine, respectful smile broke across his face. "The pleasure is entirely mine, Mrs. Fierro. It seems Giovanni has finally found someone who can keep up with him."
Across the room, I caught sight of Elena Vance standing near a marble pillar, her face pale with defeat as she watched one of the most powerful men in the city accept me without a second thought.
