Chapter 1 - The Ring on the Table

The warmth of Giovanni Fierro’s hand wrapping around mine felt entirely real, completely contradicting the absurdity of the situation. As he pulled me from the metal folding chair beside the kitchen doors into the center of the mosaic floor at the Bellmont Grand, the ambient noise of two hundred society guests seemed to plummet. The string quartet, playing a melancholy waltz near the vaulted windows, suddenly sounded distant, muffled by the collective intake of breath sweeping across the tables.
Across the room, Tyler’s smug, triumphant grin vanished. His jaw went slack, his hand resting awkwardly on Vanessa’s swollen belly as he stared at us. He knew what I looked like when I was broken—he had left me that way, curled on the rug of our cramped apartment six years ago, crying over a positive pregnancy test and a bag of groceries we couldn't afford. He did not know this version of me. He did not know the woman who spent twelve-hour shifts fighting for children’s lives in a county hospital, running entirely on adrenaline and black coffee.
"They're staring," I whispered, keeping my eyes fixed on the lapel of Giovanni’s bespoke charcoal suit as we took our first synchronized step.
"Let them," Giovanni replied, his deep, resonant voice vibrating right through my chest. His arm wrapped firmly, securely around my waist, pulling me just close enough to anchor my shaking frame without crossing into anything improper. "If you look away now, your ex-husband wins. And judging by the look on his face, he has never lost a competition in his life. It’s time he experienced his first defeat."
"You don't know Tyler," I murmured, executing a clumsy half-turn that Giovanni expertly guided into a fluid, elegant rotation. "He's petty, and his new family has enough money to make my life at the clinic a nightmare."
"Let them try," Giovanni said, his amber eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the air grow thin. "No one in this room touches anyone under my protection, Jessica. Especially not a coward who abandons a pregnant woman."
My breath hitched. "You know about that?"
"I told you, I know who you are," he murmured smoothly, spinning us outward and drawing me back in with effortless grace. "Every detail. And trust me, Tyler Brooks is the least of your concerns right now."
Before I could demand to know what he meant, Elena Vance—the imperious matriarch sitting at the head table, draped in heavy diamonds—pushed her chair back with a screech of wood against marble. Her face was twisted in absolute fury. She had spent months orchestrating this high-society gala to unite her niece Victoria with the most eligible, untouchable bachelor in Chicago, and here I was, a nurse in a clearance-rack dress, waltzing in his arms.
"Giovanni!" Elena’s voice cut across the music, sharp and venomous, as she marched toward us. "What is the meaning of this absolute circus? Who is this... this nobody?"
The entire ballroom went dead silent. Even the string quartet seemed to falter.
Giovanni didn't miss a single step. He didn't even look back at Elena until she was standing a mere three feet away. Then, slowly, deliberately, he stopped dancing, keeping his arm securely locked around my waist while turning to face the older woman with a gaze so cold it made my blood run ice-cold.

"Aunt Elena," Giovanni said, his tone dripping with lethal politeness. "Allow me to introduce my wife. Jessica Fierro."
The word dropped like an anvil into the center of the room. Elena gasped, clutching her pearls, while behind her, Victoria looked like she was about to burst into tears. Tyler, standing near the edge of the floor, looked as though he had been struck by lightning.
