Chapter 4 - The Public ExecutionThe silence in the ballroom was so absolute you could hear the ice melting in the champagne buckets near the bar.

Daniel’s face flushed a violent, mottled crimson. He glanced frantically around the room, realizing that hundreds of investors, family members, local politicians, and business associates were watching his every move with wide-eyed fascination.

"There must be some mistake," Daniel forced out, a desperate chuckle escaping his lips as he tried to regain his footing. He looked past Ryan directly at me, his eyes narrowing with a mixture of anger and disbelief. "Ellie? What is this? Is this some kind of pathetic joke? You're playing games because you couldn't handle the truth when I left?"

I stepped out of the alcove, letting my heels click steadily against the marble floor as I walked up to stand right beside Ryan.

I didn't cower. I didn't look down. For the first time in three months, the heavy weight of humiliation that had sat on my chest evaporated completely, replaced by a cold, brilliant clarity.

"The only joke here, Daniel," I said, my voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room, "was ever believing you had the character to match your ambition."

The Hollywood girlfriend let out a sharp, scandalized gasp. "Well, I never—Daniel, get me out of this hick town immediately, these people are insane!"

"Shut up, Chloe," Daniel hissed under his breath, his eyes darting back to Ryan, whose calm expression hadn't shifted a fraction of an inch.

"Wexler," Ryan said smoothly, tilting his head. "I understand you've been bragging to your new associates in California about the massive real estate acquisition you're leading in downtown Manhattan next month. Is that correct?"

Daniel blinked, swallowing hard, trying to regain his corporate posture. "Y-yes. It’s a multi-million-dollar commercial project. Backed by premier West Coast capital. We're breaking ground in November."

"Interesting," Ryan replied, pulling a sleek titanium smartphone from his jacket pocket and tapping the screen twice. "Because my legal team reviewed the municipal zoning permits for that exact parcel of land this morning. Turns out, the underlying land deed is held under an exclusive, non-transferable long-term lease owned entirely by Bellardi-Blackwood Holdings."

Daniel’s jaw dropped. "That... that's impossible. The development bank assured me—"

"The development bank answers to my board," Ryan interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so cold it felt like liquid nitrogen. "And as of forty seconds ago, my board has officially filed an injunction revoking that lease due to fraudulent misrepresentation of financial backing."

Ryan slipped his phone back into his pocket and looked down at Daniel with quiet pity.

"You don't have a project, Wexler," Ryan said softly. "You don't have a portfolio. And by tomorrow morning, you won't even have a job."

Daniel staggered backward, bumping directly into his girlfriend, who shoved him away in absolute disgust. The mighty climber from Los Angeles looked as though he had just been hit by an oncoming freight train.

And as he looked at me—really looked at me—standing beside the most powerful man in the country, the reality of what he had thrown away finally crushed him completely.
