Chapter 3 - The Arrival of the Uninvited GuestBefore I could digest the terrifying, exhilarating implications of his words, the heavy oak doors at the front of the ballroom burst open.

A wave of cold autumn air swept into the room, followed immediately by a sudden, sharp drop in the ambient noise level. Heads turned. Whispers rippled across the tables near the entrance.
I looked over Ryan’s shoulder.
My breath caught in my throat.
Walking through the double doors, dressed in a sharp tuxedo that looked like it had been chosen by an insecure teenager trying too hard to look like a Wall Street mogul, was Daniel Wexler.
Beside him walked a tall, blonde woman wearing a plunging red designer gown that practically screamed Hollywood premiere. Her hair was styled in immaculate beach waves, and she carried herself with the practiced, predatory grace of someone whose family owned half the talent agencies in Los Angeles.
Vanessa hurried across the room to intercept them, her face flushed with excitement and panic as she pointed frantically toward the alcove where Ryan and I were standing.
Daniel followed her gesture. His eyes locked onto mine.
For a fraction of a second, his arrogant, confident smirk faltered. He had expected to walk into this ballroom and find me sitting alone at table nineteen, nursing a warm glass of tap water, drowning in self-pity while everyone whispered about how he had traded up for Hollywood royalty.
Instead, he found me standing shoulder-to-shoulder with America's most elusive, powerful billionaire, looking as though I belonged in the very center of his world.
"Stay here," Ryan whispered to me, his voice calm, steady, and laden with absolute authority.
"Ryan, what are you—"
"Trust me," he interrupted, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss directly to my temple—a gesture so tender and deliberate that it sent a shiver straight down my spine. Then, turning around, he stepped out of the alcove to meet Daniel halfway across the polished floor.
I watched from the shadows, my hands trembling as I clutched the fabric of my burgundy dress.
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks as Ryan Blackwood approached him. I could see the color draining from Daniel’s face from twenty feet away. The smooth, corporate charm he had cultivated in Los Angeles vanished instantly, replaced by the pathetic, sweating panic of a minor player realizing he had just stepped onto a battlefield belonging to a god of war.
"Mr. Blackwood," Daniel stammered, thrusting his hand out with a desperate, trembling eagerness. "I... I didn't realize you were acquainted with... with my..." He hesitated, glancing back at me with absolute confusion.

Ryan did not take Daniel’s hand. He simply slid his hands into his trouser pockets, looking down at Daniel with a look of mild, clinical curiosity, as though inspecting an interesting insect trapped under glass.
"Your what, Wexler?" Ryan asked, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. "Your former fiancée? Because last time I checked my wedding certificate, she belongs to someone else."
