Chapter 1 - The Weight of Whispers and Billionaire SuitsThe heavy warmth of Ryan Blackwood’s hand resting against my bare shoulder felt entirely out of place in a ballroom filled with polite gossip and cheap champagne. My skin prickled beneath his touch—not from fear, but from the sheer, staggering absurdity of the situation.

Beside me, Vanessa Wexler—Daniel’s insufferable sister, whose family had spent the last three months treating my broken engagement like local spectator sport—froze mid-sentence. Her mouth hung open, her perfectly glossed lips parting as her eyes traveled upward from Ryan Blackwood’s custom-tailored Italian shoes, past the open collar of his crisp white dress shirt, all the way to his intensely calm, aristocratic face.
"Excuse me?" Vanessa managed to squeak out, her voice losing its previous venom and replaced by an undiluted, trembling panic.
Ryan didn't even look at her. His gaze remained fixed straight ahead, surveying the glittering expanse of the grand hotel ballroom with the casual, absolute indifference of a man who owned the building—which, knowing his real estate portfolio, he very well might have.
Instead, he tilted his head just a fraction toward my ear, his breath warm against my skin.
"Smile, Ellie," he murmured quietly, his voice a rich, baritone rumble that sent a strange, intoxicating electric shock down my spine. "We wouldn't want your former sister-in-law to think our marriage is anything less than blissful."
Before I could process the words—our marriage?—Ryan slid his arm smoothly around my waist. The touch wasn't casual or polite; it was firm, possessive, and entirely undeniable. He pulled me slightly closer to his side, anchoring me against the hard wall of his chest as he finally turned his dark, piercing eyes toward Vanessa and her bewildered surgeon boyfriend.
"Is there a problem?" Ryan asked, his tone deceptively smooth, carrying just enough edge to make the surrounding tables go completely silent.
Vanessa’s face cycled through three distinct shades of pale before settling on a sickly, mottled grey. She clutched the strap of her designer clutch bag as though it were a flotation device in a hurricane.
"N-no," Vanessa stammered, bobbing her head in a frantic, robotic nod. "No problem at all, Mr. Blackwood. We were just... just catching up. Wishing Ellie well."
"How kind of you," Ryan replied coolly, his lips curving into a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Now, if you'll excuse us, my wife and I have champagne waiting at our table. Or would you care to discuss your brother’s current employment status with my acquisitions department instead?"
The mention of acquisitions made Vanessa’s boyfriend physically recoil. Everyone in New York financial circles knew what happened when Ryan Blackwood’s acquisitions team looked at a company: they didn't just buy it; they dissected it down to the drywall.
"We should go," Vanessa whispered, grabbing her boyfriend's arm and hauling him away so fast her heels clicked a frantic, uneven rhythm against the polished marble floor.
I stared after them, my chest heaving, before turning my face up toward the man standing beside me. My heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Who are you?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the faint strains of the string quartet. "And more importantly... why on earth are you pretending to be my husband?"
Ryan looked down at me, his dark eyes flashing with a sudden, enigmatic amusement.

"Who says I'm pretending?" he asked softly.
Then, without waiting for me to answer, he scooped my hand into his, turned us toward the center of the dance floor, and pulled me straight into the swirling crowd of wedding guests as the band transitioned into a sweeping, dramatic waltz.
