Chapter 5 - The Sunrise at the ApartmentBy 7:00 AM the following morning, the heavy storm over the city had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, golden autumn sunrise that painted the sky in sweeping tapestries of gold, rose, and deep sapphire.

Inside my apartment, the warm morning light filtered through the sheer curtains, casting amber lines across the living room carpet.

Sofia lay propped against two soft pillows on the sofa, wearing a warm fleece sweater, a fresh ice pack resting gently against her swollen cheekbone.

I sat beside her, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea, gently brushing her soft dark hair away from her forehead.

The front door opened quietly.

Alexander walked inside, wearing a fresh dark suit provided by Marcus. He carried a silver tray with hot pastries, fresh fruit, and a thick leather folder bound by red judicial seals.

He set the tray flat onto the coffee table, sitting on the armchair beside Sofia, his dark storm-gray eyes scanning her face with a deep, intense relief that made my heart flutter against my ribs.

"How is the face feeling, baby girl?" Alexander asked softly, his baritone thick with deep, fatherly warmth.

"It doesn't hurt as much today, Dad," Sofia admitted, offering a soft, fragile smile. "I... I heard what happened at the penthouse. Is it over?"

Alexander opened the leather folder, setting three certified court documents flat onto her lap:

IRREVOCABLE TITLES OF UNIT 14B: Re-certified under the sole, unencumbered name of Sofia Brooks.

FEDERAL CONVICTION RECORDS: Documenting the forty-year and twenty-five-year federal prison sentences issued against Carmen Robles and Javier Robles for High Extortion, Domestic Battery, and Corporate RICO Fraud.

FULL RESTRAINING & PROTECTION ORDERS: Permanently barring every associate of the Robles family from coming within five miles of Sofia or Elena.

"They will never touch your home, your name, or your life again, Sofia," Alexander promised softly, taking her small hand into his broad, calloused palm. "You are completely, permanently free."

Sofia buried her face against her father's shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering sob of total, weightless relief that she had been holding back for months.

Alexander wrapped his broad arms around our daughter, holding her close against his chest, his eyes meeting mine over her dark head.

In that quiet, sunlit moment, ten years of bitterness, distance, and unspoken regret between Alexander and me dissolved into thin air, replaced by a profound, unshakeable bond forged in the fires of protecting our child.
