Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of an EmpireThe silence in the Grandon ballroom was so absolute you could hear the ice melting in champagne flutes across the room.

Valentina Rossi’s chest heaved beneath her emerald silk gown, her eyes bulging as she stared at me standing beside her ex-husband in a blazing red dress.

"Nico, I am warning you!" Valentina hissed, stepping forward, her voice trembling with rage. "Take this... this absolute nobody away from our table right now before you make a complete fool of yourself and our family name in front of the entire city!"

Nico didn't even blink. He didn't raise his voice. He simply looked down at his ex-wife with the chilling, detached composure of a Supreme Court justice delivering a final verdict.

"Valentina, the only person making a fool of our family name tonight is sitting right beside you," Nico said smoothly, gesturing with a flick of his wrist toward Liam.

Liam was practically shaking. His face was ghostly pale, sweat beading along his hairline despite the air conditioning in the grand ballroom. He pushed himself halfway out of his chair, his voice cracking with panic. "Dad—Dad, what is this? What are you doing? Why are you with her?"

"Sit down, boy," Nico ordered, his voice like the crack of a whip. "You don't get to ask questions tonight. You only get to listen."

Before Liam could speak, Nico turned his attention back to the crowded table, raising his glass slightly as if offering a toast to the surrounding onlookers who were shamelessly straining their ears to catch every word.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Nico announced, his rich baritone carrying effortlessly across the silent hall. "I apologize for interrupting the evening's festivities. But since my eldest son and his... companion have chosen to showcase their new domestic arrangement so publicly tonight, I felt it only appropriate to share a few family updates of our own."

Amber let out a strangled gasp, clutching Liam’s arm so hard her fingernails dug through his sleeve. "Liam, do something! Stop him!"

Liam couldn't move. He looked paralyzed, trapped in the headlights of a freight train driven by his own father.

"Effective this morning," Nico continued calmly, "the internal compliance and forensic auditing division of Rossi Global Holdings completed a comprehensive review of our Tribeca subsidiary accounts. We discovered a systematic, unauthorized diversion of corporate development capital totaling precisely 3.8 million dollars."

A collective gasp rippled through the surrounding tables. Several prominent corporate executives standing nearby visibly recoiled.

"And through a remarkable stroke of investigative diligence," Nico added, turning his slate-grey eyes directly toward me with a subtle nod of professional respect, "those discrepancies were brought to my attention by Dr. Luna Sinclair—a brilliant, ethical professional who was recently subjected to the very worst kind of petty, deceitful betrayal by the very people sitting at this table."

The cameras flashbulbs flared in a blinding, synchronized frenzy. Reporters near the press barrier shoved forward, desperate to capture every word, every twitch, every drop of sweat on Liam’s face.

Valentina looked as though she was going to faint. She grabbed the edge of the table to steady herself, her voice a shrill whisper. "Nico... you're destroying your own son's reputation in public..."

"My son destroyed his own reputation the moment he decided to steal from my company and humiliate an innocent woman under my family's roof," Nico replied, his voice devoid of mercy. "The federal financial crimes bureau has already received the complete dossier. Federal marshals are currently executing search warrants at Liam’s downtown office and his secondary residential properties as we speak."

Liam let out a choked, desperate sound, half-falling out of his chair as his legs gave out. "Dad... no! You can't do that to me! You can't send federal agents after your own flesh and blood!"

"You stopped being my flesh and blood the moment you traded your integrity for a cheap lie," Nico stated coldly.

He turned to me, offering his arm once more. "Shall we dance, Dr. Sinclair? The evening is still young, and I believe these people have urgent matters to attend to with their defense attorneys."

I placed my hand back into the crook of his arm, my chin held high, my posture absolute.

As Nico and I turned and walked away from the ruined table, leaving behind a weeping Amber, a shattered Liam, and a shell-shocked Valentina, the classical string quartet hesitantly resumed playing.

And then, softly at first, a few guests near the front began to clap. Within seconds, the applause swelled, rolling across the magnificent ballroom like thunder.
