Chapter 5 - The Grandon BallroomThe Grandon Foundation Charity Gala was the absolute pinnacle of Manhattan autumn society.

When our black town car pulled up to the sweeping marble steps of the Grandon Hotel, flashbulbs immediately began to pop like lightning storms through the tinted windows. Paparazzi and society reporters lingered outside, eager to snap photos of billionaires, politicians, and philanthropic royalty.
Nico’s private security detail cleared a path for us the moment the door swung open.
Nico stepped out first, offering his hand to help me down. As my silver heels touched the marble steps, a collective murmur rippled through the press line. Cameras whirred furiously, capturing the unexpected sight of the notoriously reclusive billionaire escorting a striking, unfamiliar woman in a blazing red gown.
We walked through the towering glass double doors and entered the magnificent ballroom.
Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead like frozen stars, casting a warm, golden glow over hundreds of guests dressed in high couture. A classical string quartet played softly from a raised dais while servers circulated with flutes of vintage champagne.
At first, I didn't see them. The room was simply too vast.
Then, scanning the perimeter near the VIP seating area reserved for major corporate donors, I spotted the Rossi family table.
There sat Liam, wearing a smug, self-satisfied grin as he whispered something into Amber’s ear. Amber was dressed in a pale pink gown, clinging to his arm like she had won the lottery, basking in the envious glances of society wives who didn't know the truth behind their stolen romance. Sitting directly beside them, resplendent in emerald silk and diamonds worth more than my entire apartment building, was Valentina Rossi—Liam and his sister’s mother, a woman whose social snobbery was legendary across the Upper East Side.
They looked happy. They looked untouchable.
They thought the drama was over. They thought they had won.
Then, the murmurs near the entrance began to ripple forward, spreading like a wave across the ballroom floor. Heads turned. Conversations died down mid-sentence. Dozens of pairs of eyes shifted away from the stage and locked onto the doorway.
Nico Rossi and I began walking down the central aisle toward the VIP seating section.
We didn't rush. We moved with the unhurried, devastating grace of royalty entering a conquered province.
Liam was the first to notice. As the crowd parted to let us through, his casual laughter froze in his throat. His glass of champagne slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the carpet and splashing dark amber liquid across his polished shoes.
Beside him, Amber’s smug smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated horror.
And at the head of the table, Valentina Rossi dropped her silver fork against her porcelain plate with a sharp, echoing clink.
We walked right up to their table.
Nico stopped, releasing my arm for a fraction of a second, his slate-grey eyes locking onto his eldest son with a look so cold and heavy that Liam actually shrank back into his chair.
"Good evening, Valentina. Liam. Amber," Nico said, his voice cutting through the silent ballroom like a sheet of industrial glass. "I trust you're enjoying the evening."
Valentina stood up, her face flushing a furious, mottled crimson, her eyes darting frantically from her ex-husband to me and back again. "Nico! Have you completely lost your mind?! What is the meaning of this?!"
"Mother, sit down," Nico commanded, his tone dropping an octave into a register of absolute, terrifying authority that silenced every whisper within twenty feet.
Then, Nico turned slightly, extending his arm back toward me with quiet, deliberate courtliness.

All eyes were locked on us. The entire ballroom held its breath, waiting to see what would happen next.
And that was when the real show began.
