Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Shattered TuesdayThere are moments that divide your entire existence cleanly into a before and an after. They don't arrive with a dramatic roll of thunder or a cinematic cue; they slip into your world on ordinary Tuesday nights, wearing the mask of routine.

Mine happened at exactly 11:23 PM.

The instant I clicked my key into the deadbolt of my Manhattan apartment and pushed the door open, a sound drifted down the hallway. It wasn't the welcoming rustle of someone reading a book or the low hum of the television. It was laughter.

It was light, careless, intimate laughter—the kind shared between two people who believed they were entirely safe from the rest of the world.

My stomach twisted into a violent knot before my rational mind could even process the warning bells. My fingers tightened instinctively around the leather strap of my purse. Every instinct screamed at me to turn around, to walk back down the elevator, and to pretend I had never heard a thing. But my feet refused to obey. Mechanically, painfully, I took one slow step after another across the hardwood floor until I reached the master bedroom.

The door was slightly ajar. A thin strip of warm, amber light spilled across the dark floorboards.

I pushed the door open just enough to see inside.

Liam, the man I had loved, supported, and built a life with for the past three years, was lying naked in the center of my bed.

He wasn't alone.

Curled against his side, her head resting comfortably on his chest, was a woman with long, sun-bleached blonde hair. Hair that fell in the exact same wave as mine. Hair that belonged to my younger sister, Amber.

For one agonizing, impossible second, my brain completely rejected the visual data. My synapses failed to fire. I stood frozen in the doorway, staring at the intertwined limbs, the rumpled sheets, and the sickening ease with which they existed together in my private sanctuary.

Then, survival instinct kicked in. Without a conscious thought, my hand dipped into my coat pocket, my thumb unlocked my phone screen, opened the camera, and flashed.

Click.

The sharp, unnatural sound of the camera shutter pierced the quiet room like a gunshot.

Liam bolted upright, his eyes widening in horror. "What the hell?!" he shouted, frantically scrambling across the mattress to grab his discarded shirt and pants. "Luna! Wait! I can explain! It’s not what it looks like!"

Amber didn't even bother to rush. She didn't flinch, she didn't scramble, and she certainly didn't look ashamed. With agonizing slowness, she sat up, reached out, and pulled my favorite silk bathrobe around her shoulders, tying the belt with casual precision.

She looked straight at me, a lazy, mocking smirk playing on her lips.

"Hey, sis," she said, her voice dripping with insolence. "You're home early."

Something deep inside my chest didn't just break—it shattered completely into fine, razor-sharp dust.

It wasn't my heart. That had already been fractured a thousand times by the sudden chill in Liam’s behavior over the last six months. It was whatever polite, civilized restraint had been holding back my absolute, unadulterated rage.

"Get out," I whispered. My voice didn't shake. It was terrifyingly, unnaturally quiet.

Amber swung her legs over the edge of the bed and stepped closer to me, invading my space without a single trace of remorse. "Don't look at me like that, Luna. He came to me," she said, her eyes flashing with malicious triumph. "I didn't steal him. He was tired of you. You're just so... predictable. Safe. You're an office job and a cup of tea. I'm the excitement he actually wanted."

My vision blurred. Not with tears—never with tears. Tears were for mourning what was lost. This was pure, blinding fury.

I grabbed the decorative feather pillow off the armchair beside me and hurled it directly at Liam’s face. Then another. Then the heavy ceramic bedside lamp, which shattered against the wall behind them with a deafening crash.

"Get out of my house!" I screamed, the sound tearing violently from my throat. "Get out before I lose my mind!"

Panicked and half-dressed, Liam stumbled toward the door, tripping over his own shoes while trying to yank his belt through his loops. Amber brushed past me, her shoulder intentionally bumping mine, offering me one last, sickeningly sweet smile before disappearing down the hallway behind him.

The heavy front door clicked shut.

The apartment fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

I stood alone in the hallway for a long time, the smell of their betrayal thick in the air. Slowly, my knees buckled. I collapsed onto the floor, pulling my knees to my chest, and cried until my throat was raw, until there were no tears left, and until the cold, pale fingers of sunrise began to creep through the living room curtains I had forgotten to close.
