Chapter 2 - The Command at Three A.M.Ethan’s jaw clenched with such force that a razor-sharp muscle twitched along his carved cheekbone.

For three years, Ryan Miller—the thirty-two-year-old nephew of Ethan's chief financial officer, Arthur Miller—had managed the secondary night security detail across the Lake Forest estate. Ryan was an arrogant, aggressive man who used his uncle's high-ranking corporate position to bully the domestic staff, demand special treatment, and treat the female housekeepers like personal property.
Every servant in the mansion feared him. Every maid kept her eyes lowered when Ryan walked down the service corridors, knowing that complaining to management meant facing his uncle Arthur's immediate legal retaliation.
Ethan didn't pull away. He stood before me, reaching out his broad, warm hand to gently frame my pale face, his thumb softly brushing away the hot tears from my cheek.
"Listen to me very carefully, Ivy," Ethan spoke, every word dropped into the quiet kitchen like a heavy slab of cold granite. "At six o'clock this morning, when the administrative offices open, you will walk up to my private third-floor study. You will bring every single invoice, medical bill, and collection notice for your mother's treatment."
I stared at him through my tears, my mouth opening in total, speech-bound shock. "Sir... why?"
"Because by twelve o'clock today," Ethan declared, his storm-gray eyes burning with an absolute, sovereign promise, "your mother's debt will be paid in full by the Caldwell Private Trust. She will be transferred to the private VIP pavilion at Northwestern Memorial, and her care will be overseen by the chief of oncology."
"Mr. Caldwell... no..." I stammered, my hands trembling violently. "That's... that's over fifty thousand dollars! I'm just a maid... I can't accept that... I can't repay you..."
"An employee was brutally assaulted on my property while wearing the Caldwell crest, Ivy," Ethan corrected flatly, his deep voice carrying a velvet authority that left zero room for argument. "You are not just a maid in this house. You are under my protection. And no one who works under my roof carries fear alone."
He turned slowly, walking back toward the heavy mahogany door.
He reached for the brass lock, turning the deadbolt with a quiet, metallic CLICK.
"Lock this door behind me, Ivy," Ethan instructed softly, without turning around. "Do not open it for anyone except my chief butler, Thomas, at five A.M."
"Where... where are you going, Mr. Caldwell?" I whispered, my hazel eyes wide with sudden, sharp anxiety.
Ethan paused on the threshold.
His broad, six-foot-three frame filled the doorway, his silhouette illuminated by the cold corridor lights. A dark, terrifying, and razor-sharp smile touched his carved profile—a look of pure, unyielding vengeance that made my heart leap in my chest.

"Ryan Miller and I have an operational matter to discuss," Ethan replied softly.
The door closed behind him with a low, heavy thud.
