Chapter 3 - The Chemistry of SurvivalBy 5:30 AM, while the early morning mist still hung low over Green Lake, I stood inside the chemistry laboratory of West Seattle High School.

The school was completely dark and empty, save for the hum of the ventilation hoods and the faint amber glow of the emergency exit signs.

I didn't wear a dark tactical suit. I wore my teacher's corduroy jacket, my hands steady as I unlocked the heavy steel chemical storage vaults behind my lecture desk.

For ten years, I had taught high school students the elegant, precise laws of molecular bonds, reaction rates, and elemental composition. To my colleagues and my wife, I was just David Lawson—the quiet teacher who spent his weekends grading papers and building wooden dollhouses for his daughter.

They forgot that before I became a teacher, I held a Master’s degree in Industrial Chemical Forensics from the University of Washington, specializing in synthetic compound identification and digital surveillance countermeasures.

I pulled four glass vials from the locked cabinet:

Silver Nitrate & Luminol Reagents — To expose forensic blood and latent fingerprint residue across my estate.

Potassium Hydroxide & Dimethyl Sulfoxide — A rapid-acting organic solvent that could neutralize digital electronic locks and encrypted hard drives in seconds.

Anhydrous Ethanol & Trace Volatile Markers — To create an undetectable chemical signature that would track any vehicle that entered my garage.

I packed the vials into a dark leather satchel alongside an encrypted external hard drive I had retrieved from my desk drawer.

My phone in my coat pocket buzzed softly.

It was a text from my lead intelligence contact—a former university classmate named Commander Leo Vance, who now served as the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Task Force in Seattle.

VANCE: David, we analyzed the offshore wire transfers you sent from your house at 3:00 AM. The accounts belong to Julian Sterling’s shell firm in Grand Cayman. They’re planning to execute the mortgage bankruptcy fraud at 8:00 AM today at the Manhattan Bank downtown.

I looked at my watch. The hands read 6:15 AM.

"They're going to try to stage my death at 9:00 AM, Leo," I spoke softly into my earpiece.

"Not on my watch, David," Vance assured cleanly over the line. "I have twelve federal tactical units standing by. We can raid your estate right now."

"No," I replied, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal register that made Vance freeze on the other end. "If you raid the house now, Julian's legal team will claim he was just a trespasser and Emily will play the innocent victim. I want them both in the same room... holding the forged documents."
