Chapter 5 - The Fall of Richard VanceAbove ground, the battle for the Mercer Estate was brief, brutal, and absolute.

Richard Vance had underestimated the lethal, unyielding efficiency of Caleb Mercer’s defense network. Within twenty minutes, twenty-four of Vance’s thirty mercenaries were neutralized or captured by Mercer’s private security operators.

At 1:30 AM, inside the rain-slicked marble foyer of the estate, fifty-five-year-old Richard Vance sat bound to a chair, bleeding from a shoulder wound, flanked by Marcus and four armed operators.

The heavy double oak front doors opened.

Caleb Mercer walked into the foyer, wearing a dark tactical vest over his dress shirt, his custom sidearm held at low-ready. He didn't look injured; he looked like an apocalyptic god of vengeance stepping through smoke.

Vance thrashed against his steel bonds, his face contorted in a mask of manic, sweat-slicked rage. "MERCER! YOU CAN'T DO THIS! I HAVE SENATORS IN MY POCKET! THE POLICE WILL BE HERE IN TEN MINUTES!"

Caleb stopped two feet from Vance, looking down at him with a quiet, weightless coldness that froze the blood in Vance's veins.

"The police aren't coming, Richard," Caleb revealed deadpan, holding up an encrypted digital tablet. "Because the United States Attorney’s Office and the FBI just raided your private residences in Tampa and Miami ten minutes ago."

Vance’s jaw sagged open in total, speech-bound horror. "W-what...?!"

"Daniel Harper’s original audit ledgers," Caleb explained, every word dropped like an iron weight, "alongside the wiretap recordings gathered from your mercenaries tonight, have executed an absolute, unappealable RICO indictment against your entire firm."

Lead Prosecutor Rachel Vance and six Federal Marshals stepped through the front entrance, holding official arrest warrants.

"Richard Vance," Prosecutor Vance announced flatly. "You are under arrest for First-Degree Murder, Domestic Terrorism, Human Trafficking, and Corporate Fraud."

Heavy steel handcuffs locked tightly around Vance’s wrists behind his back as he thrashed frantically, weeping tears of pure, pathetic terror as he was dragged out into the rain to spend the rest of his life in a federal maximum-security penitentiary.

The threat that had destroyed my husband’s life and hunted my daughter was permanently, historically erased.
