Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary in the HillsBefore I could answer, the church's side entrance swung open. Stepping through the shadows was Marcus—Caleb’s chief security lieutenant—holding a satellite phone, his face pale and tight.

"Boss," Marcus reported urgently. "Vance’s scouts just pulled up two blocks from the church. They know Daniel’s widow is inside."

Caleb didn't flinch. He reached into his coat, pulling out a soft cashmere scarf, gently wrapping it around Lucy’s neck to block out the draft.

"We're leaving through the rectory," Caleb commanded. "Bring the armored sedan to the rear alley."

Fifteen minutes later, the dark windows of Caleb’s bulletproof SUV glided through the wrought-iron gates of the Mercer Estate—a sprawling, fifty-acre oceanfront sanctuary perched on the high bluffs overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.

The mansion was surrounded by ten-foot stone walls, infrared surveillance cameras, and elite private guards in dark suits. Yet inside, the house was filled with warm, golden light, plush velvet furniture, crackling stone fireplaces, and the gentle scent of fresh orchids.

Lucy’s eyes went wide as she walked across the marble foyer, her small hand slipping out of mine as she ran toward a magnificent grand piano near the sweeping staircase.

"Mama! Look how big this house is!" Lucy giggled, her bright, innocent silver laughter filling a mansion that had sat in cold, silent isolation for nearly a decade.

A warm, elderly woman in a crisp apron—Mrs. Gable, the estate manager—stepped forward with a radiant, welcoming smile, carrying a silver tray laden with hot chocolate, fresh berry pastries, and warm soup.

"Welcome home, little lady," Mrs. Gable beamed, leading Lucy toward the sunlit dining area.

Caleb guided me into his private ground-floor library, closing the heavy mahogany double doors behind us.

He walked over to his desk, picking up a thick leather binder bound by red legal seals, setting it flat onto the wood between us.

"Three months ago," Caleb spoke, leaning his broad hands flat on the desk, "your husband Daniel came to my office. He was working as a chief auditor for Vance Logistics. He found sixteen months of off-ledger financial transfers showing that Richard Vance was laundering money through human trafficking and illegal weapons shipments across the gulf."

I swallowed hard, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the back of an armchair. "That's why Daniel was checking our locks... that's why he told me people would do anything to protect a lie!"

"Daniel gave me a copy of those ledgers, Clara," Caleb revealed, his gray eyes darkening with deep, genuine remorse. "I told him to stay quiet while my team built an airtight federal case. But Vance found out... and he murdered Daniel before we could secure your family."

Tears burst from my eyes, cutting clean tracks through the dust on my face. "He died because he tried to do the right thing..."

"He died because I didn't move fast enough," Caleb corrected flatly, stepping around the desk, stopping two feet from me, his voice thick with an absolute, unshakeable promise. "And I will burn Richard Vance’s empire to ash before I let him touch you or Lucy."
