Chapter 3 - The Audit of the SyndicateFor two weeks, the Mercer Estate became a fortress of healing, truth, and absolute protection.

While Caleb’s private legal team and intelligence operators worked round the clock, my daughter and I experienced a life we had only dreamed of. Lucy had her own sunlit bedroom overlooking the rose gardens, filled with new clothes, books, and toys. She spent her afternoons baking cookies with Mrs. Gable and drawing colorful pictures in the sunroom.
Every evening at 6:00 PM, Caleb returned from his corporate offices. The feared mafia boss—a man who commanded hundreds of men across Florida—would take off his dark suit jacket, roll up his sleeves, sit on the low carpet in the living room, and let Lucy teach him how to play tea party with her stuffed animals.
I watched them from the kitchen doorway, my heart swelling with an emotion so deep, so profound, and so warm that it scared me.
Caleb wasn't the cold, ruthless monster the media portrayed. He was a man who had carried the crushing weight of a tragic past—a man who had lost his younger sister to syndicate violence nine years ago and had spent every day since using his power to shield the innocent from the dark.
On a rainy Tuesday evening, while Lucy slept peacefully upstairs, Caleb and I sat near the roaring stone fireplace in the library, drinking warm tea.
"You look different, Clara," Caleb observed softly, his gray eyes searching my face with an intense, magnetic tenderness. "The color has returned to your cheeks."
"I haven't felt safe like this since before Daniel died, Caleb," I confessed softly, looking into his eyes. "You gave us our lives back."
Caleb reached out his broad, calloused hand, his long fingers gently cupping my cheek. His touch was so light, so reverent, and so filled with devotion that my breath caught in my throat.
"I didn't give you your life, Clara," Caleb whispered, his deep baritone shaking with raw emotion. "When your daughter prayed in that church two weeks ago... she saved my soul."

The quiet tranquility of the library was shattered by a thunderous explosion echoing from the front security gates of the estate, followed immediately by the terrifying chatter of automatic rifle fire.
The alarm sirens began to wail through the corridors—a high-pitched, metallic screech that shattered the night.
