Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesAbsolute, suffocating chaos erupted in the recovery room.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure shattering instantly as a federal marshal stepped firmly in front of her, reading her rights aloud. "Do you know who my family is?! We own half of Chicago! We are personal friends with the mayor!"
"Your family owns a collapsing house of cards built on stolen municipal funds and forged real estate deeds," Marcus Thorne replied coldly, stepping past the agents to stand beside me. He handed me a crisp wool blazer, which I slipped over my shoulders with calm precision.
Julian spun around, his face turning an alarming shade of pale purple as he stared at the federal agents securing his parents and blocking the doorway. He whipped his head back toward me, his eyes wide with a mixture of absolute terror and murderous betrayal.
"You," Julian choked out, his voice cracking as he pointed a trembling finger at me. "You planned this. All of it. The contract yesterday... the financial disclosures..."
"You brought the contract to me, Julian," I reminded him softly, stepping closer so only he could hear the ice in my voice. "You shoved a document in front of a woman three days post-C-section, surrounded by your entire family, and demanded I sign away my children to protect your dirty money. You were so desperate to cover up the forty million dollars you embezzled from the residential expansion funds that you legally itemized every single shell company in the addendum."
Julian stumbled back, colliding against the portable printer the legal aide had brought. "That’s... that’s impossible. Our corporate lawyers vetted that agreement three times!"
"Your corporate lawyers were as arrogant and sloppy as you are," Marcus interjected smoothly, holding up a certified court order. "Furthermore, under federal statute 14-B, any contract executed under extreme medical duress, severe emotional intimidation, and deliberate concealment of marital assets is null and void ab initio. Meaning, Julian... your divorce is cancelled. But your criminal trial? That’s just getting started."
Sienna, realizing her golden parachute was burning up in mid-air, let out a piercing shriek and tried to bolt for the door.
"Stop her!" I commanded sharply.
Two federal marshals smoothly stepped into Sienna’s path, blocking the exit.
"And where do you think you're going, Sienna?" I asked, walking slowly toward her until she was forced to shrink back against the wall. "You wore white to a maternity ward to celebrate stealing another woman’s family. But let’s see how fashionable prison orange looks on you when the DA tacks on accessory to corporate fraud and wire tampering for those offshore accounts registered under your maiden name."
Sienna’s face drained of all color. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. Her carefully curated, high-society life evaporated before her eyes in less than sixty seconds.
Eleanor was still screaming threats of lawsuits as two marshals escorted her out into the hallway, her designer handbag dangling uselessly from her arm. Julian stood frozen in the center of the room, staring at me as if he were looking at a ghost—or a monster of his own creation.
"Take him down to federal holding for booking," the lead prosecutor instructed, gesturing to Julian.
As Julian was led past me in handcuffs, he stopped for a fraction of a second, his eyes swimming with pathetic, desperate pleading. "Maya... please. We were married. We have a family. Drop the charges. We can work this out—"
I didn't even blink.

"My name is Ms. Bennett," I whispered coldly. "And my sons and I are leaving."
The heavy hospital doors closed behind them, leaving the room instantly silent, save for the peaceful, rhythmic breathing of Leo and Oliver still sleeping soundly in their bassinets, completely unaware of the empire that had just fallen around them.
