Chapter 2 - The Midnight AuditBy 2:00 AM, the hospital room had transformed into a clandestine war room.

The lights were dimmed to a soft amber glow, casting long shadows across the linoleum floor. I sat upright in the adjustable hospital bed, pillows propped behind my lower back to ease the throbbing ache of my surgical incision. My laptop glowed brightly in my lap, illuminating spreadsheets, wire transfer receipts, corporate tax filings, and offshore bank registries that had taken months of quiet, covert hacking and legal subpoenas to assemble.
My phone vibrated silently against the mattress.
An incoming encrypted call from Marcus Vance—no, not Julian’s father, but my private legal counsel, Marcus Thorne, a ruthless corporate litigator who owed me his career after I helped him expose a massive embezzlement scandal five years ago.
I swiped to answer, keeping my voice down so as not to wake the twins.
"Marcus. Tell me you have good news."
"Maya, I'm looking at the documents you and Sarah forwarded," Marcus’s voice came through the encrypted line, thick with a mix of awe and sheer disbelief. "I don't know how you pulled this off, but Julian and his father are sitting on a ticking time bomb. By forcing you to sign that waiver regarding the Vance Real Estate holdings, they legally itemized twelve different shell companies tied directly to the illegal acquisition of municipal land grants and offshore money laundering."
"They thought they were burying the evidence by making me sign away my right to look," I replied coldly, my fingers flying across the laptop keyboard as I cross-referenced a wire transfer date with Julian’s corporate calendar. "Arrogance is a fatal flaw in men like the Vances. They never imagine that the woman they dismiss as a housewife is actually the auditor who designed their corporate structure."
"The DA’s office is already reviewing the file," Marcus confirmed. "Because of the emergency nature of the coercion—signed under explicit medical duress three days post-C-section in a hospital room surrounded by twenty hostile witnesses—we can petition for an emergency injunction to freeze every single Vance corporate account by sunrise. But, Maya... what about the custody agreement? You signed away legal and physical custody of the twins in that document."
A sharp, humorless smile touched my lips.
"Marcus, a contract signed under duress, while heavily medicated on postpartum pain management, and executed under clear extortionary threats is legally void before the ink is even dry," I reminded him smoothly. "Besides, the document explicitly states that custody was surrendered contingent upon the full, legal, and transparent disclosure of all marital assets. Since Julian intentionally concealed over forty million dollars in undisclosed offshore accounts during the settlement negotiations, the entire contract is fraudulent from top to bottom."
"It's a masterstroke," Marcus breathed on the other end of the line. "When do you want to drop the hammer?"
"Not yet," I said, my eyes locking onto the crib where Oliver let out a soft, sleepy sigh. "Let them walk through that door tomorrow morning. Let Eleanor bring her matching designer outfits for the boys. Let Sienna rehearse her triumphant speech about how she’s going to play mother to my children. I want them to taste total victory. I want them to feel the crown resting securely on their heads—right before I rip it away."
"Be careful, Maya," Marcus warned softly. "Viktor Vance isn't just a businessman. If he realizes he’s cornered, he won't hesitate to use every dirty trick in his arsenal."
"Let him try," I whispered, terminating the call.

I closed my laptop and leaned my head back against the pillows, staring up at the acoustic ceiling tiles. They thought they had broken me. They thought handing me $200,000 and a swift dismissal was the end of my story.
They had no idea it was only page one.
