Chapter 1 - The Voice on the LineThe cold plastic of the receiver felt like ice against my ear. My hand trembled so violently that my knuckles knocked against the edge of the manager's desk.

In the background of the diner office, Frank Miller stood with his back pressed against the wall, sweating profusely, staring at me as if I were already a dead woman walking.
"H-hello?" I choked out, my voice barely a whisper above the sound of the rain lashing against the windowpane.
A heavy silence stretched over the line for three agonizing seconds. Then came a deep, smooth baritone—a voice that dripped with velvet authority, dark and calm, carrying an implicit weight that made my breath trap in my lungs.
"Miss Carter," Dominic Vale spoke softly.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. "Mr. Vale... I'm sorry about earlier. I didn't mean any disrespect. I saw the blood and... I wasn't thinking."
"You touched my face, Lily," he said softly, every word slow and measured. He didn't sound angry. He sounded... fascinated. "For sixteen years, no living person has put their hand on my skin without my permission and lived to draw another breath. My men expected me to break your wrist."
"I... I know," I rasped out, tears of wild panic pricking the corners of my eyes. "Please... don't hurt Frank. Don't hurt the diner. It was just me."
A soft, low hum echoed over the line—a sound that was dangerously close to a chuckle.
"Look out the window, Lily."
My eyes darted toward the office window overlooking the rain-soaked parking lot of the Harbor Light Diner.
Parked beneath the yellow streetlight was a single, matte-black armored sedan. The rear door opened, and Marcus Reed—the broad-shouldered bodyguard who had nearly drawn his weapon on me twenty minutes ago—stepped out into the downpour holding a wide black umbrella and a thick leather folder.
"Marcus is coming inside with a document," Dominic’s voice instructed through the earpiece. "You will sign it, you will collect your belongings, and you will step into my car."
My throat went dry as bone. "And if I say no?"
"If you say no," Dominic replied smoothly, "you will go home to your small apartment on Elm Street, you will lock your door, and you will spend the rest of your life wondering why a man who rules half of Pennsylvania's eastern seaboard is standing on your fire escape. I am not giving you a choice, Lily. I am giving you a sanctuary."
The call ended with a quiet click.
Two seconds later, the office door swung open, and Marcus Reed walked in, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an unreadable, intense look.

He laid a leather binder flat on Frank’s desk, opening it to a certified contract stamped with a gold wax seal.
"Sign on the line, Miss Carter," Marcus commanded flatly. "As of five minutes ago, you are no longer an employee of Harbor Light. You are the Private Personal Assistant and Medical Aide to Don Dominic Vale."
